Finally, I asked for these two options...

I will tell you my experiences as soon as they arrive at home.

The first of these (the Arkon) is exactly the same as mine. As far as the second is concerned, I'm a little skeptical about attaching anything which is going to carry the weight of the TomTom directly to an air vent's ribs - I'd be scared of causing damage.

The Brodit Proclip solutions look decent, but I do not want to cover the air vent, or indeed install anything permanent in the car, as I only use the sat nav occasionally.

I have received the items ordered that comment before and I've been tested.

For now, the best option for me is...

Thanks everyone for your help

I don't know if this is of any use to any of you but if you order the aftermarket portable sat nav's from BMW they fit it into the area located on top of the dash in the center where there is the rubber mat bit with the sticking up bit.

They connect it to the audio system and it folds away into that area. Might be work taking that bit off and having a look to see what you have got in there to play with.

Well, here in Portugal we have a company that would easily take care of that... they specialize in that sort of stuff.

Check what they did to add a big screen to a Ferrari (but they have lots of other custom jobs done - everything top quality.)

Get a bosch hammer drill with a 24 inch masonary bit,

drill through the dash and feed through power cord to your tomtom attaching it to some wires in the engine bay with crocodile clips and electrical tape.

complete the aesthetics of the job with flexible filler and black/beige paint,

stand back and admire the job

PLEASE NOTE this is a joke don't do it

I ask it because original Garmin/BMW mounting and powercable comes up through that storage box.

BMW Portable Navigation System Pro*
Designed for use both in and outside the car. The high-resolution 4.3-inch touch screen display offers 2D and 3D map views. The BMW Portable Navigation System Pro is also packed with features such as pre-installed maps covering 33 European countries, audio output via the vehicle’s loudspeakers, voice recognition, and a built-in TMC function. Slots securely into a special mounting in the dashboard, which also recharges its battery. Also available is the BMW Portable Navigation System Plus without pre-installed maps

Judging this picture they replace the storage compartement with this... this could be a nice option if they found a way to keep the storage compartment!

I'm holding my breath now for the new solutions the TOMTOM GO 1000 will offer, this new device will be mounted via a magnetic clip, so this creates loads of possibilities for a clean install!

I am quite happy now

This how I did it. I do not use this car and the GPS daily so I was looking for a solution to use my TOMTOM XXL in my X1 without any visible wires and when the GPS removed no signs of a GPS system in this car ever used.

I bought a cradle for the TOMTOM XXL from Brodit, had a 12 V wire installed in the compartment. When you put the GPS system in the cradle you can clip it between the cover of the compartment and the rubber inlay. It really fits well.

The pictures will show it.

GPS solution

Hello
it is my first messagge, I 'm waiting for my BMW x1 xdrive and I think that It is the best solution for a new GPS. I have one question, it is easy to put a 12 v connection in this space? I am thinking to put the GPS (for my iPhone tom tom car kit) i think it's similar conection and in the BMW sales shop they put in my car a hands free (parrot mki 9200) because i buy it in their shop and it is paid with the car. And i want to put the hands free display and the cables to conect a mp3, iPod or something else in this space. If my BMW installer put the hands free display (it is very small and i to put in a corner of the ******* in this space i think that the 12 v connection is only another cable to put in.
Can you take a photo in the inside of the space to see the cable 12 v and the hole that you have to do to pass the cable.
Thank you very much for your experience

wiring

@Peras74 : If I should have take a picture you would not see anything. Ask your BMW sales shop when they install your carkit and tehy wil remove the radio and the airco panel at that time to drill a little hole in teh cabinet and do the wiring for you. 5 minutes extra work for them and very usefull for you.

I hope you will enjoy your new X1 as much as I do. Have fun!

BMWhizzkid: Did you do the 12v install yourself or did the BMW dealer do it?
