Engine Compartment - Is This Normal

I do not often look in the engine compartment of my 2014 X1 S-Drive, but I was changing the air filter recently and noticed a series of holes in the front driver's side wheel well as seen from the engine bay. I do not recall ever seeing an open connection of the wheel well into the engine bay. Is this normal or is something missing here?

In the photo I shined a light from the wheel well to highlight the area.

Yes, it is normal. The body is prepared for different engines, hence different requirements and components.
No a pretty sight as BMW could put a piece of plastic to cover that, but it is normal.

Teutonic, Thank you for giving it a look see and letting me know. Not sure why I never noticed it in the past.
