Going from 2011 e93 to an X...some questions

I have a leased 2011 e93 M Sport vert that is coming due in April and now that I have a kid I think it is time to get a 4 door.

I don't want a sedan and I have an Explorer for a big SUV.

I think the X1 might be a good option to look at.

I have some questions.

1. How is the new 4 cylinder? Should I just try for the x35 over the x28
2. Are the run flats as bad on the X as they are on the cars (I have replaced 5)
3. Is the M Sport worth it on the X
4. What would be the must have options...Just curious, I typically get everything.
5. Anyone know what a 3 year 10k mile lease payment might look like.

Any other advice would be great...thanks

1. I have the 4 cylinder and I love it! Really! You should try both and see which one you would like. I bought mine when they just arrived in Canada (mine is one of the first, I think the second in Canada) and was no 35 option back then. But I don't miss the 35 anyway.

2. I had a flat with my RFT after few miles. I have replaced it right that day but it was insanely expensive ($500). Bought an extra set of wheels (18" replacing the 17" OEM) and install non-RFT on them; ride is much better. I would probably sell the car with the OEM wheels when is ready to go. So for me, Non-RFT.

3. I don't have an M sport, again this showed up later.

4. I bought my vehicle fully fully loaded. I think you should get at least the lighting package with xenon lights. I also wanted badly the sound system.

5. I always buy my cars so I am not aware of lease payments; I guess will be irrelevant anyway since you are in US.

Give it a try. We looked everywhere, including Evoque, X3 and Audi. The X1 meets all the requirements that we need in terms of dimensions, transmission, amenities and driving experience.
Good luck!

1. The new 4 cylinder has exactly the same pull as the 6 cyl non-turbo.

2. I'm on 18s staggered RFT I'm not sure if they are summer performance, but the ride is smooth to me. For comparison I had 2007 328i with 17s and the ride was rough. After that I got 2006 330i with 18s and was smooth.

3. The M-Sport suspension is good on the corners and to me it's not stiff at all. If you don't like the black plastic liners that appear on all Xs (like me) than it's worth it. Also the color combos I think are somehow unique with the M-Spoort. The red/black interior with the anthracite headliner give it really classy two-tone look.

4. Packages are just personal preference. I opted for the Premium package. For $2K more I think the Ultimate is worth it, but I didn't want the navigation. I like how my Android phone integrates at the iBox with a Y-cable.

5. With current incentives and the options I got the final price came to $39K and the lease is $428 with down $3K, residual close to $26K, 10K miles per year. Just look up the lease offers on the website and stick to it. You can see what your lease is gonna be before taxes for the MSRP you opt in. It doesn't
matter which model it is.

At the end I'm extremely happy as I don't like big SUVs, but I like how the X1 look like one. I also don't like the shape of the wagons, which the X1 actually is but little higher.

Like others have said the 28 engine is the way to go. Also the steering is hydraulic on the 28 versus electronic on the 35. Many people like feel of the hydraulic better. We got the M-Sport over the Sport because of the seat color choice. If not for that the Sport line would have been fine. That said the matching trim is nice. We also got ours loaded. Where we live navigation is not needed but when traveling it will be nice (and was certainly great in Europe). As for the run flats / stiffness I need to do some comparison ...

The steering is also hydraulic on the 35, it just has assist.

I just ordered mine a couple of weeks ago, so I can only answer this as someone who test drove most variants and then ordered a car, and I will also be going with a 3 year/10k mile lease.

1) The 35 is obviously faster than the 28, but both are incredibly quick compared to the other cars in this class, and the gas mileage ratings are significantly higher for the 28. That, together with the lower price, and the newer 8 speed transmission convinced me to stick with the 28.

2) I was concerned about this as the roads are rough where I live, so I opted not to get any of the line packages and just went with the basic 17" wheels with 225/50/17 tires. I drove the car with both the 17s and 18s, and you can definitely feel bumps in the road more with the 18s. On the other hand, I could not really feel a difference in the handling between the two. I suspect with the M-Sport suspension then it would probably handle better, but I think with the normal suspension the 18s are just for looks and the 17s actually give a better ride.

3) I can't comment on this since I did not drive it. I guess I'm getting old..LOL. A few years ago I would have grabbed the tightest suspension and largest wheels/tires I could find on any car I was getting. Now I just want a nice smooth ride.

4) Problem with this car is that if you start adding lots of options, the price of this car can get quite out of hand in a hurry, especially on a lease. The options don't have much of a markup, so adding more options doesn't seem to give you the ability to bargain much more on the price of the car. As a result, a fully loaded car, while only about 30% more in MSRP than a base model, seems to have about a 50% higher lease rate. So I intentionally decided to get it as stripped as I could live with. I'd say if you want to spend more, I'd go with a higher model like the X3 with fewer options instead. Just my opinion.

5) I got a Xdrive28i with only the Sapphire Black Metallic paint, Technology Package, and Lighting Package. MSRP is $37,225, and my lease payment is $360/month with $0 down (taxes and inception fees to be paid upfront).

From what I have read on this forum, once you start loading this car up with the Premium/Ultimate package and an X-line/Sports-line/M-Sport package, you are looking at $500-550/month on a lease.

I hope that helps. Good luck!

1. Awesome, although fuel mileage is not SOOO much better than the 3.5i...but it's many $K less
2. I'm still using mine and though they aren't as punishing as they were on my 335i, I'm still looking forward to wearing them out so's I can get some better NON RFT rubber on it
3. Absolutely
4. in Boston, Heated Seats...anywhere, Xenons...NAV is soso at best...HK maybe
5. Nope

get a cargo box as it comes with cross bars and the boot just isn't quite big enough

1. The N20 engine is definitely a wolf in sheep's clothing. The 8sp auto that it comes with is almost perfect.
2. The RFTs are terrible. I find they lack traction even in the dry. Plus, they're hard and expensive.
3. The M-sport has the nicer exterior than the X-line or Sportline. The suspension is lowered 3/4" and made a bit more stiff. I bought a sportline because the interior for me was much nicer looking and that's where you spend your time. You lose the heated steering wheel with the M-Sportas well. To cure the suspension height, I lowered my car with Ac Schnitzer springs.
4. I got everything but navigation, only because I have zero use for built in nav everyday. The Ultimate and Cold Weather would be good choices for you.
5. I financed mine, no idea what a lease pmt would be.

Definitely try a 35i and a 28i back to back. Also, try the m-sport vs x/sport line back to back. For me, the only reasons I didn't get the m-sport were the loss of the heated wheel and the rather bland interior if you like black leather.

Thanks for the input, I have black leather and bamboo trim on my car now so I am used to the very dark interior.

I don't have the heated steering wheel now because of the M sport...but I think it would be nice to have.

I think the only color besides the LMB is the mineral grey (have a black Explorer).

Nav is a must, I use it all the time for my job. Love the xeon angle eyes also.

I need to go test drive one, hope it's more like a small SUV vs a wagon.

This was a concern for me too as I have a bad back and need the upright seating position to be comfortable. Basically it drives like a sports sedan, but seating position is like a small SUV.

The sport seats are very good, manual, and have the most adjustments I've ever seen in a car.

I'm a 6 footer, put myself up as high as I can go to get up near the wheel, and can wear helmet with plenty clearance.

It also has electric lumbar, and my less than 5 foot wife can push the wheel towards the dash, and get the seat up good for her , too.

This was my big dilemma: 17" wheels/tires or lumbar support, can't have both. So as with most decisions, when I can't make up my mind I go with the cheaper option. So I opted not to get the sports-line package and instead go with the regular seats.

I will say that I've never found lumbar support to be a big issue with my back as many people do. It's more important to have the right seating position, and the upright SUV-like seating position should be fine for me.

I have an E93 335 and an X1 28s MSport.
1. Turbo 4 is great, it will be faster than your E93
2. My Goodyear Eagle summer run flats are not bad at all
3. Absolutely get the M Sport for body painted, seats, suspension
4. I have almost all options so it's up to you, you have to get Nav to be able to get PDK
5.don't know about the lease

1. I've been very satisfied with the N20 in my X1. It replaced an M20 525 that I had been driving here in Germany so it was a huge improvement. The N20 doesn't make the nice normally aspirated inline 6 sounds of past BMWs but has way more performance. Same HP and more torque than my old E36 M3 to put in perspective.
2. I have no qualms with the Pirelli RFTs on my X1. Having suffered a catastrophic flat on my Touareg last year in which no can of fix a flat would have fixed (had to be plugged with a half inch plug, it was that bad) I'll continue to replace with RFTs. Now, if there was a spare it would be a different story.
3. Can't really answer this as I don't have an M Sport.
4. I say load her up. I bought an X Line demo from a Military Sales dealer in Germany that came loaded up with all of the options, except the HK sound, to include Ultimate Package, Cold Weather Package, Lighting Package, Oyster Leather, Matte Fineline Bay wood trim, and BMW Apps. I bought it as it was pretty much as I would have ordered except I might have checked the HK stereo block as well. But stock stereo isn't bad. This is the cheapest BMW that is offered in the US. Don't skimp on the options.
5. Don't know about leases as I've never leased. Don't believe in leasing vehicles.
