For track S2K is a fun car. It lacks the power but hella fun to drive it like you stole it and shifting is just too fun not to shift every other second.

I agree. Wife is really pushing for an E46 M3 (subframe issues concern me as do the rod bearing issues), an M Coupe (rod bearing and maybe subframe issues as well?) or a Cayman S...

S2000 is the most reliable and lowest running costs by far but also the least exciting of the four.

Put another way, the S2000 is also the lightest, purest, highest-revving, best-shifting, least-compromised car mentioned, while asking the least of its owner with regards to maintenance and costs.

370 is a good car, good platform but I personally don't like the VQ much. Had it in a Maxima 6MT a long time ago and it aged quickly (but was solid reliable). Two friends have since had G37's and blah...
For a mainstream motor, it's solid. Plenty of torque, 300+whp capable for not much money. Depends on what you want. I wouldn't buy one over a Porsche, but ownership cost should be lower.

I need to call the porsche dealer today and get maintenance costs/intervals on a Cayman S and see what those guys have to say. Online isn't a lot of help in that regard with many folks saying the M cars are more expensive to maintain than a Cayman and plenty of others saying just the opposite with no real data to help steer the conversation.

I am going to do some research on maintenance costs between them all. Believe it or not the Porsche Cayman S is cheaper to insure than the M3 or the M Coupe (most expensive). The difference isn't huge but I was expecting the P car to be the most expensive. Since you don't have to worry about subframe issues and bearing issues on the P-Car that's worth thinking about...

I have always loved the E46 M3 though...

Cayman S, man. They're great out of the box. Can get a nice one under $30k now.

You'd have to dump $2-3k into the 1 Series to make it drive like a proper BMW. Suspension, tires, etc.

I had an S2000 for 10 years and miss it daily. Get one that hasn't been in a wreck, with low-ish miles and you'll have just bought a future classic that meets all your needs...except for the kids/backseat part.

Don't "need" a backseat. S2000 still on the list. Wife is really wanting a Cayman so that's also becoming a strong contender.

Hard to go wrong with a Cayman. only downsides that come to mind are difficult engine access if you're a tinkerer (and it sounds like you were with the z06) and not inexpensive parts.

Just got the new Car and Driver... their long-term Cayman S cost something like $3,400 in regular maintenance over 40k mile vs. under $700 for their C7. Of course it can be done more cheaply by avoiding the dealer (my parents just spend like $3k+ at the dealer for their '07 base Cayman for basic maintenance and brakes, plus another $800 for TPMS sensors... at like 26k miles) but it will still be multiples more than an S2000. Spark plugs on mine cost me $40 and 15-20 minutes. Oil changes are 5qts of synthetic and a $12 filter (you don't even get a dipstick on the Cayman, so good luck). Front brake rotors are $50 shipped from Amazon. Tires are 16" or 17". It's a different world of maintenance costs.

You probably don't care about this, but strangely, gas mileage won't be noticeably better on the S2k though. 4k rpm at 73mph = pretty mediocre mileage for such a small car and engine.
