High beams work or for show?

I have a 2013 X1 s28 with xenon headlights. The other day at a traffic light a shiney black SUV was in front of me and I blinked my high beams to view the reflection and noticed that the high beams on the driving lamps came on, but the high beam lamps did not come on. I tested with the head lamps again with the "ON" light switch and depressed the high beam lever and again no high beams on the high beam head lamps. I question if this is normal or an electrical issue? Or are these secondary lamps for show? Thanks for assisting.

The high beams are the same element as the low beams, if I understand what you're thinking, you expect the inside bulbs to light? The inside bulbs do not house the high beams.

Yep, those inner "lights" on BMWs with Xenon (or LED I believe) are now just fillers. They had to keep them there to maintain the classic 4 headlight BMW look. But they are just sad empty shells now.

With bi-xenon headlights, what we have, the high beams are located within the same projector of the low beams. I believe ours work as follows: the high beams are actually always on, when the low beams are on. A tiny shade moves up, and exposes the high beam, when we switch to high beams. So, there is only a single light, with a shade hiding the high beams, until we move the shade up to expose it.

Edit: wait, I think I misunderstood what you were saying. Yes, SocttMZ3 is exactly correct, the "secondary" halos are just there to keep the 4 halo ring BMW look. There isn't an actual HID light inside of the halo.

Thanks for the reply guys. I have an old 325ci that I drive the most in good weather and use to the four lights on when in the high beams. Interesting BMW kept the lights for the Classic BMW look. Thanks.

The inner ones are flash-to-pass bulbs since xenons wouldn't fire up quickly enough to work in that manner.

Sorry, but that's wrong. Flashing the high-beams does invoke the HIDs.

The Bi-Xenons are both your low- and high-beams. The inner pair are cornering lights, which do come only when you have your headlights set to "A" for adaptive, and they've swung one way or the other during a turn. The respective side of the vehicle which you're turning towards will light up the turning light to fill in some of the area in front of you that your headlights are no longer pointing at.

Well, you are partially right. The cornering lights that are part of the adaptive lighting package are actually the FOG lights in the lower bumper. The inner most "lights" (closest to the kidney grills) are NOT used for anything. They are only there to maintain the 4 headlight BMW look. There are no bulbs in them at all. Park your car in front of a reflective window and test it out. I noticed it while at the dealer picking up my car the day I bought it. It was parked facing a window and the salesman showed me how the cornering lights work.

Checked this morning...low and behold, they've changed the philosophy. That's certainly counter to how my previous 135i Coupe and current 1M Coupe work, as well as every 3er I've seen lately.

To quote Arte Johnson as Wolgang: "Very interesting...but stupid!"
