The true performance enthusiasts on this forum lament the loss of the longitudinal mounted N55 (I.e.smallish vehicle + big motor = fun). I understand why BMW moved away from this as it was not a volume seller. No sense harping though, but rather hoping they will give us 300hp+ 4cyl with rear drive biased awd. Side Note: I have noticed the trend that 6cyl models are getting very expensive. I shuttered when I saw the price of a reasonably equipped 340i xdrive approaching US$60K. Same with comparables from Audi and Mercedes.

I keep my E84, future plans with it are canceled however.
I got a company car now next to it so I don't drive it that much anymore.
When I do still I still enjoy every minute in it.
Company car is a Peugeot 206 now (and I hope a 308 soon) so you could image it is night and day difference.

I just purchased a 2015 X1 xDrive35i, specifically for the 6cyl engine (coming from a manual 4 cylinder 2006 Mazda 6). This car's MPG is about as good as my previous car for combined driving with the addition of ethanol, and there's nothing that can convince me to get an auto 4, regardless of rated power specifications.

So far, loving my new X1!

Question Alignment and Tire Wear

Hi - Need your advice... I love my 2013 X1 M Sport (31,500 miles), I bought it brand new in March 2013. I bought both the extended maintenance warranty and the tire warranty/insurance. I've had to replace both run flat rear tires (different times) due to punctures. No problem there. However every time I go in for regular service they recommend getting an alignment and new front tires. And they also recommend flushing the transmission. None is covered under the warranties.

Do you think I need to do this? Now they claim the front tires are wearing on the outer edges more than the inner treads? The left front tire has 3mm and the right front tire has 2 mm. And its just the tread measurement on the outer edge. Why are you front tires doing this? Should I pay $1200 to get an alignment and new front tires?

Let me know if they are taking this girl for a ride!

Alignment should be $250 at the most. Most places I'd expect it under $200. I wouldn't hesitate to get it at 31K miles, though, so it seems like a reasonable suggestion for the right price. Tread depth of 2mm is getting very close to needing replacement, and ideally you'll want to do both at once. Just check tire prices on tirerack.com and make sure you aren't getting gouged by the dealer. $1200 sounds like too much for what you've described.

My biggest thing with the 2016 X1, is this it looks very similar to a Mazda 5. yes that's right, a mazda 5

As mentioned I think they should have kept the X1 in its dimensions and just update the cabin and cabin tech.

Charging nearly 3k just to get a backup camera seems highly exaggerated.

I also noticed that it got a downgrade in performance?
going from 240 to 228? My goodness, I am just curious to see what happens.

All I know is, i am keeping my X1. Truely one of the best cars I have ever had. (I have only had 2, am i too young to say that?)

Drove one extensively yesterday. It is a very comfortable car with much better space utilization than the last X1, but can definitely feel the front wheel drive bias when driven harder. Best characterized as a very nice ride, quiet, smooth, etc, but not the most dynamic handling.

Let's put it this way, I though a 2011 X3 3.5 M-Sport would run circles around the new X-1. However, will reserve final judgement until the M-Sport package comes here.

You know I had the same feeling coming from a Subaru Impreza (the thing had great visibility and very tiny blindspots), but after a little while I got used to it and now I can see everything again :-)

I just got mine (CPO 2014 28i xDrive) a couple of weeks ago, so it isn't going anywhere for quite some time!

Glad you like the new remodeled X1. I sat in one Saturday. While it's not the vehicle for me since a 6cyl is no longer can be offered, it has a high value proposition for the intended audience that requires more space, smooth ride and good gas mileage. The new 4cyl should be more refined than the N20. From this vantage point, it is an improved vehicle that should sell well for BMW. We will see many more on the road than the last generation. Enjoy the drive. Hop on over to the F48 forum.

Saw the new X1 yesterday at my local dealer. Wow I just don't get it ... overall I don't think the design looks that great at all. I was expecting/hoping to be impressed. Everyone is raving on how much of on improvement it is over the e84, especially in the looks department. I don't think so at all. I like the looks of my e84. And I especially like my 6 cyl engine, steering, etc. The f48 seems like a step backwards IMHO.

It is only a step backwards for performance enthusiasts. For the intended audience it is fine, a little pricey with loads of options, but it provides a larger cabin, smooth ride, updated interior scheme and materials and good gas mileage. Don't expect it to be an athlete like the E84 - that is not its intended purpose. We all lament the platform change; yes, we performance junkies feel like we got screwed over bigtime, but we are a small segment and BMW is not building the F48 to appease us. Savor and baby your E84 35i as it was likely the last of its kind BMW will build for quite sometime. Maybe BMW will throw us a bone and build a 350HP+ subcompact SAV X2. Question is how many would buy it on a FWD platform.

I knew about the Audi, but I always thought the STI's were neither FWD not RWD... More of a true 50/50 split. At least that's how my Impreza felt.

And I guess I should clarify that as "sports BMW", since you're right, many sporty cars are FWD
