How do we know DPF does regeneration?

Recently, I have a torque pro app + bluetooth. I would like to know when the DPF does regeneration process.

Some said the Catalyst Temperature should be around 500-600 degree but I drove in high way few time in hours but only see it came to 320 degree in 4-5 mins. However, I smelled something like burning of rubber or kind of chemical. I don't know it is when process starts or just because of the tyres' smell when around 100km/h. I quite sure that it is not smell from area because I could smell the same in the west and east area.

If you can share your experience, I would be very appreciated.
Cheers.

Do they automatically regenerate?

I always thought they had to be 'serviced' and entered in to regen mode..

I'm a noob to DPF, but I now have 1 with my 20D so I would like to know this

It is automatically when the amount of soot increases. I think software can request for DPF regeneration. I will try this weekend.

Oh I see.

That makes sense so it can be entered in to that mode by software but it can also do it automatically.

I know my old Audi A6 could be programmed via VAGCOM to do a DPF regenerate. VAGCOM was great for checking what soot levels were, as well as modding various bits [auto dip wing mirror, visual for rear sensors, always on rear leds etc]

Is there such a software program for BMW?
