Thanks for all the feedback!

I ended up putting a deposit down on 328i. No dealer had config I wanted so had to order.

328i
Mineral Grey
Nav with BMW Assist/Enhanced BT

Got 4k off MSRP and with 1k rebate ended up with cap cost of 35k.

The wife wants a X3 ( will get around year end) so I get the sports car and she'll get the SUV.

Well after driving them both for awhile (as loaners) I have to admit I like the F30 328xi more than expected and 30+mpg is well within reach (unlike with the X1 with same powertrain.) I'd consider paying the premium for an F31 wagon vs. the X1... Many bits are a notch nicer- nice interface that comes w/o navi is pretty cool and seems well integrated but no std camera with it? That said I definitely wouldn't consider it a sports car (never was w/o an M badge) and not sure I'd put it in the sport sedan class either anymore- at least not without some sort of sport suspension packaged on. If its a sports car you're after and you want a BMW, you need to change your order to an E82 1 series, quick while you can... I kid, F30 is a nice car with a way better interior than the former but it is less engaging, much less so than my E82 even though it may be a tick or 2 quicker.

Even though you kid, I agree that the E82 is the truer to the BMW heritage than the F30. The E82 is the modern day E36, IMHO. The F30 has a wealth of creature comforts and high-tech gadgetry that make it a "luxury" sports sedan.

I drive my parent's F30 328i often and I'm starting to appreciate may of the advanced features (blind spot detection, lane departure warning, collision warning, heads-up display, variable suspension, surround cameras with birds-eye view, EfficientDynamics and Performance displays, full color instrument cluster, etc.).

That said, I'm happy with our E82 and E84. If we weren't expecting our first child, I would not have traded our E90 for the E84.

Oh no, not the sports car debate again. Having owned an E82, while it's sportier than the F30, I wouldn't really call it a sports car either (unless we're talking 1M Coupe). The Z4 is as close as BMW comes these days, and the current generation is sort of borderline on my definition of a sports car.

Anyway, OP, enjoy the 3er, it's a nice car and should be a nice complement to your wife's X3 when she gets it.

No debate here, Monterra was kidding when he used the term "sports car".

I love the diversity in the BMW line right now, there seems to be a fit for everyone's needs (if you have the budget). I just don't like the "line" ordering they are forcing on us now here in the US.

Yeah no debates, the E82 isn't an all out "sports car", I agree, but it is the closest (non-M) thing BMW makes to one IMO (Z4 could be argued but we're not arguing) and decidedly sportier than the F30 that I am actually enjoying as a loaner. A lot more than I expected and taken together it is a much nicer car especially in base form than a pedestrian E90 loaner was- also more expensive and quite large, but nice. I'll be eyeing the 320ds for sure as that's my main gripe- the N20 does NOT deliver on EPAs estimates, not w/Xdrive latched to it anyway. If they price it right- between the two gassers I think it will do quite well.
