X1 sighting in NY

Just spotted this X1 at NY Thruway rest area today. It's about the size of a 3er wagon with a little bit of lift.

Another NA car on steel rims, interesting. Those are not alloys but plastic wheel covers. I have the same on my winter tyre set although those tyres do not look like winters. Also no engine designation but the twin pipes point to a 6cyl petrol.

That is xdrive35i I think because if you take a look into interior you will notice Sports automatic transmission with double clutch shifter from 1 series and Z4 that have 35i engine and I think it is 8-speed auto ...

Damn why they did not put that auto tranny in all X1's here in Europe.
Can't wait for F31 and then I am moving to that. Hopefully that will have 8-speed auto from start.

Wishful thinking.... But I don't think so !

It's the same California-plated X1 spotted in WA, isn't it ?
Probably a pre-series test model (perhaps to test public reactions ?)

The standard steptronic gear shifter looks different, so it very well may be the DCT transmission mated to the N55 turbo engine.

They also have a radar detector which means they must have been worried about cops while using all of the 300hp for testing.

Is that not a manual sport shift?

PS: Just for interest BMW have often used standard double pipes for the standard 2.5/3.0 six's and chrome plated ones for the top end six's.

That is definitely the 7-speed DCT shifter.

Not necessarily, that is also the Sport Automatic shifter. Very different thing. Sport Automatic is just software programing for the standard automatic transmission that gives you quicker shifting, rev matching on downshifts, etc. and has been offered on several BMW models (incl. the new X3 35i)

I doubt that BMW is putting the DCT in the X1, this is almost certainly the Sport Automatic option.

You're right. I thought the Sport Automatic was this shifter...

But I see now that it does change to the DCT shifter with the option. Good catch!

Didn't someone say they spotted a "35i" testing in the states somewhere? It's looking more and more hopeful that we will get an N55 powered X1 in the states. I will buy one without hesitation.. sounds like it will be the perfect car for Canada.

It could be the 8 speed automatic that will come with the Twin Power Turbo 2.8i that was just announced.
