For those contemplating mud flaps...

They are pretty easy to fit.

As has been mentioned before, they can be done with the wheels on - just do full lock one way for the screws nearest the outside, then full lock the other way for the screws nearest the engine.

Tools needed (in my experience):
The instructions - get your dealer to print them, they do not come with the flaps
3mm drill bit and drill
8mm short and long socket (plus handles)
Small screwdriver
Set of pliers
Torx screwdrivers/socket heads (size 2 I think)
A golf tee (to stick up one of the plastic screws to stop it buckling)
Patience

BMW make the screws about 3mm shorter than they could be, just to make it more fun.

Total time to fit:
About 30 mins for the first front and rear, then about 10 minutes each for the second (learning from the first!)

Saved me £100 - glad I did it.

and while we're on this subject, if you are contemplating them, and haven't got round to it, I recommend them heartily.

When I bought my X1 I stupidly forgot to get the dealer to throw them in as part of the deal. Two weeks in, I noticed the back end was getting seriously "cacked up". So I bit the bullet and fitted the mud flaps.

Since then I haven't really noticed excessive "cack", or even thought about it until this thread appeared. Which just goes to show they must work!
