I cut off the silver part with a Dremmel and used the factory mount, with a self tapping screw to attach it to the remaining portion.

I like the cup holder. Cup holders take up a lot of space and are only used occasionally. No other car manufacturer I know of has made an optional cup holder. Well done BMW.

Saab did it with the 2003 9-3.
I use the BMW cup holder for my phone. It fits great.

How did you rig it for your phone? I've seen the solution of decapitating the holder and gluing the phone cradle to the base. I'd rather keep the cup holder intact and not purchase a 2nd one.

The official name for this part is a "front can holder". I'm trying to find a cylindrical object the size of a pop can which I can cut off at a bevel to which the phone holder can be attached. Wood dowels don't usually come this big. Any thoughts?

My 9-3 has one. It also has a 2T engine that doesn't sound like a Massey Ferguson.

A buddy of mine thought it was a diesel the first time I started it up (it's debadged).

Go to Home Depot and check out the plumbing department for PVC pipe. You can get it in several diameters and lengths. I believe mine is 1 1/2"" in diameter and I bought a "cap" for one end. I can use the suction cup of my Garmin on it.

The first view is from the top (skew is visible on the cap)
The second view is from the side where you can see the cap on the right and the other end is open. If you were a plumber could set another PVC pipe into the larger open end.
Notice the PVC pipe is an end part so the cap can fit on it.

PS The wrap is for aesthetics

Cool solution! looks more like 3" diameter pipe no? what did you wrap it with? I might spray paint the pipe instead.

Yes, I think it is like lumber measurements. Actual is 2 1/2" but buy at 3"

I just 3M spray glued some black shelf mat. I'd measure the BMW cup holder and go off from there

my solution

I finally got around to do some shopping today. I picked up a phone holder for $3 the material of which perfectly matches the cupholder trim. Then I went hunting for a tin of some type that would fit into the cupholder and offer a nice surface for the phone holder suction to be applied. It took about 2 hours but I found one containing "decorating sugar" ($4) that worked well.

PVC pipe and end cap is same concept

and they come in various lengths so you don't have to do any cutting. Just glue the end cap on and go

Good find, but only works with a phone.
My pipe, as shown earlier, works with GPS or Phone

IAC, try Amazon for a reduced price on your phone holder

Or even this one:

Belkin holds devices up to 3.25" wide or long (mount rotates 90 degrees). I got it on Amazon for $30.
