My X1 days are over...

Well I traded in my X1 yesterday and picked up one of the few remaining 2020 Toyota GT86s.

It's been an absolute joy, but the timing chain uncertainty simply caused my wife and I to lose all faith in being able to take the car on anything other than local drives (and completely ruled out tracking the car anymore).

Unfortunately I also had an extremely negative BMW related experience when I traded the car in that will get posted in the General BMW section.

So to all of you, continue to enjoy your wonderful little oddity of a car. I'm sure I'll still hang around here for awhile

I'm pretty sure the Toybaru would be a quite a bit less practical than the X1.
Every car has their Achille's heel. The n20 is used in hundreds of thousands of BMWs. While the timing chain plastic guide is a worry, statistically it is very low. But if it keeps you and your wife awake, then it is best to let it go. No point losing sleep over it. Enjoy your new car!

Words coming from the guy who has an RX-8 (I see in your profile) rotary

I also have an RX-8 with over 100K miles on the original engine (mid-late 2006 build). Compression is a little low, but the dorito is still spinning.

Well my original first choice was the Miata, so the 86 is massively more practical in that aspect

The practicality or just plain usability was what killed the Miata. My wife could barely fit her feet and purse on the floor. I think she would have been willing to live with the massively small trunk. but not being able to sit comfortably was a deal breaker (and one I could not disagree with!)

Besides, we have a Honda Pilot as the practical vehicle.

bucketfoot The 86 I'm sure will be funner car at the occasional track event. It's definitely a good car for what it was made to be.

What happened with your BMW dealer incident? I thought I read that all US based car dealerships aren't owned by the actual car manufacturer, so it's more the dealer network (Autonation, etc.) or specific dealership that sucks.

I've recently had a family member who bought a new Porsche with an extended service warranty from an Autonation Porsche dealer. Turns out you can only go to anAutonation Porsche dealer to get the extended service work done for free and not just any Porsche dealer.....

I'm the OG owner of my RX8 with OG engine. I treat her with respect but not babied either.... redline everytime, 87 and cheap dino. Thing still pulls like mad and screams R-rated automotive noises.

@bucketfoot, the Toybaru is lots of fun with some practicality over the MX5. But if it's my money, I'd go with a ND2. Mazda did it so right with this one. Grassroots racing support of the Miata is second none IMHO. I'm still waiting for an STi-ed BRZ! That would give the new Z and base Supra a run for their money.

The ND2 absolutely would have been the choice if my wife could have fit her feet and purse comfortably in it. It probably would have at least acceptable if it didn't have the dang hump in the passenger footwell.

She absolutely loved the look & style of the car and really wanted to like it (especially since this is not officially but kind of my 60th birthday present to myself).

Bottom line is my life has been much better off by having my wife happy, so this was something I was more than OK with. In fact I told her the Miata was out of the running before she had to say it. She felt so bad about it and I wanted to help unburden her from any guilt on it.

The office of the CEO has opened a case on this to try and understand what happened.

I was really pissed off initially, but it is what it is. All I really wanted was for them to look into it, so at this point I'm good with it all.

Now that said, between loss of trade-in value, paying extra for a CPO that should not have been a CPO and buying a car with undisclosed damage; I figure my overall impact was in the $4-6K range. So if they want to do something about that, I most definitely will not say no

I'm not going to ship them, but if anyone in Colorado wants a set of OEM 17" wheels with Pirelli Sottozero winter tires let me know.

I'd be willing to do a pretty dang good deal on them.

Today is officially one year since I traded in the X1 for a Toyota 86.

While I loved my time with the X1 and certainly miss the power of a turbo from time to time, overall I have absolutely no regrets. The 86 is simply a much more fun car to drive and I no longer have the need of the extra seating and space of the X1.

Funny thing though is that while I no longer own a BMW (and am not likely to ever own another one) I still spend more time on this forum than I do on the FT86Club forum

The one thing I miss the most is the heated steering wheel in the winter
