Remove tray in center console.

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
I am buying a 2014 X1, 28. I want to remove the cell phone tray in the center console between the two front seats, is it possible? It takes up too much space in the box. Thanks for your help!

Depends if you are comfortable with a Dremel. Its east enough to pull the electronics out, however, the plastic holder is a folded piece that requires either cutting it in half or full disassembly of spring loaded armrest pin. The inner part and armrest uses the same pivot pin.
Myself I just pulled the electronic part out and use it as a tiny shelf. Its not great, but better than unused Icrap device holder....(android rules!!!)

That piece of plastic junk will be removed as soon as I get my X1. I will store my personal protection device in that space.

Sig 938 or a Springfield EMP 40 cal. When I am on duty I carry a Glock 22 or a Sig 1911 Nightmare depending on how cold it is on the K1600.

For removal, I might use a heated knofe for plastic. a Dremel will put plastic dust every where. the Pieces are very flexible. I thouhgt that I might crack it when opening up the two pieces to remove the electronic portion.
a heated Xacto knife (using a lighter) would allow the knife to cut cleanly, I think a small part of the hinge area would stay. the knofe doesn't need to be too hot, just enough to slice thru easily, you would have to reheat it several times.

good luck

Let me know how that works out. I plan to keep my M&P 9mm in the car and am looking for a good spot. Do not keep it in the car when unattended, but want a handy spot for a quick response if needed

My dealer claimed that they'd have to replace the whole center console.

The dealer said that removing the tray would cause CanBus faults since it is hard wired.
I have found another place for my Kimber Ultra Carry II Custom Shop. It is really too bad that the center console is almost worthless.

Disappointing. (That removing it could cause faults, not that you found another place for the Kimber).

I have no technical capacity to contest the dealer, and clearly the cable has a power feed to it so it's there should you decide to plug in, but does anyone know (a) if CanBus monitors the resistance or capacitance of things like this cable/connector that are not actually being used, just in case, or (b) whether this cable or connector is part of an always-functioning loop in the electrical/stereo/iDrive system?
If the answer to both is "no," then I would think disconnecting the cable or tucking it away under the console after removing the annoying/useless/disappointing/over-engineered plastic tray shouldn't cause an electrical fault unless the cable is shorted. Even if the answer is yes, however, I would think that it should still be possible to work around that to not induce the fault...

There was another thread about this, you would have to look around/back. It showed how to remove in great detail. Very good but to technical for me. One of the other suggestions, which I thought at the time was a bit rough, was to just " Tape it Up ". That's what I have decided to do with that strong Motor Tape you can buy. Just make sure you allow the Arm Rest to slide back and forward. Or ask the dealer what would the costs be to remove.

A better idea might be just to somehow connect it to the console cover by using some kind of cable or maybe even some velcro (whatever is easiest), and then when you open the console the tray opens with the cover so it won't get in the way anymore.

The problem with taping or tying it up is that it still takes up room. I did end up buying the I-Phone cradle so at least it has some function. But the whole center console is nothing more than an over engineered waste of space. The console in the X3 is fairly good you still need to protect the plugs near the bottom of the box.

Yeah, the center console is pretty useless. I don't like using the clip on cup holder, so that pretty much fills up my center console as I keep it stored there. So to have some interior storage space, I keep my manual in the trunk in that net covered bin on the right side, and will use my glove box for storage.

I believe those instructions were for a X3. The set-up is a lot different in a X1.

That's what I have suggested. Read my comment - Tape it "UP", which would be taped to the sliding arm rest, or do you call it The Console Cover. When I lift mine the Cell Phone Tray comes up with the Arm Rest/Console Cover leaving the hole I want.

While I'm just satisfied with mine Taped Up. You can only put one pair of sunglasses in the deep section and some assorted cables and stuff with them including the cup holder. Although you can get sunglass holders that replace your grab handles. Anyway it takes up half the space and probably should be on the option/ accessory list before purchase. Did you mean you ended up buying the I Phone ADAPTOR, as I'm thinking of getting for long holiday trips.

Yes I broke down and got the I-Phone adaptor. I figured that If I had to have the plastic piece of junk It might as well have a function.
