Interior space, X1 vs F30 3 series

okay so I have seen multiple people comment that the X1 isn't as roomy inside as the new 3 series (people replying to why the 3 series cost $7,000 more).

But when I put the numbers together that doesn't seem to be the case, we have no X1s in the US to look at so maybe some people in other countries could chime in.

Head Room
X1 F 41 R 40
F30 F 40.3 R 37.7
Leg Room
X1 F 41.4 R 34.9
F30 F 42 R 35.1
Shoulder Room
X1 F 55 R 55
F30 F 55.1 R 55.1

Maybe its just me, but 0.6 inches in the front and 0.2 inches in the back of leg room doesn't make it a much smaller inside! Shoulder room is exactly the same, and X1 has more headroom (makes sense, taller car).

Now the X1 is 6 inches shorter than the F30, so I am guessing that 6 inches mainly comes from trunk (boot) space, obviously 0.8 inches comes from leg room.

Thanks for the post - Great info. My concern is going to be cargo room in the X1. Seems to be about on par with my e90. (not taking the height advantage into consideration) With one passenger, a rear facing car seat, fold-up stroller and a bunch of baby stuff in cargo area, we could be packed in like sardines!

Yeah if that is your main baby transport car it might be tough. We have an X3 for that which is perfect. We would still take the toddlers in the X1 (two forward facing seats) but it would be for trips not involving the stroller, like to the grandparents, won't need much cargo space for those trips...

really does seem like the trunk floor is where the space was cut, so it might still have 14.5 cu feet but thats only because there is space going up which isn't at all useful in some situations.

I really wish I could see one of these in person already, trying to decide between a Volvo S60, Audi A4, and the X1, wife will be driving it half the week and wants AWD which all of them have, I think the Volvo wins out for price/features/comfort but will come in last with handling, accelation, and overall sports car feel. All their MPG are about 22/30 so that is a non factor.

Should I buy one?
Traditionally, competition for the 3 Series Touring has come almost exclusively from other premium-badge estates, but this time around there are internal candidates vying for your cash. The X1 crossover is roughly the same size, cheaper and will do almost as good a job, quote from What Car?
