Exclamation 8 speed in 35i? USA guys that've ordered, come on in.

So I spoke with my dealer this morning, as I wanted to confirm what tranny comes with the 35 vs the 28. From my understanding, the 28i gets the new 8, where the 35i gets the old 6...

He told me both engines get the new 8. Now I know dealers are usually clueless, but so far he's been pretty good. Adding to my confusion is the BMW website, where on the x1 page it only makes mention of the 8 speed.

Have any of you US guys ordered a 35i yet? I'm really curious. Would love the 8 if possible, as I really prefer the 35i if I get xdrive.

Thanks.

Press release, order guide, price list and all pictures from the intro show the 6 speed auto for the 35. I think the dealers are usually the last to know what's happening compared to what gets posted on this board and others. I ordered the 28. I can't figure out why they used the 6 speed unless they had a lot of inventory which is doubtful with just in time inventory or it would embarrass the X3 so bad they had to even the playing field.

I had figured that the electronics etc on the X1 was closer to the E90 series which is why they stuck with the 35i + 6speed since it is likely a US-only product. Whereas the 28i 2.0T + 8speed + efficientdynamics is being used ROW so they had better incentive to develop this combination for the X1.

All speculation on my part. I could be completely off.

Your dealer is misinformed. It is the 6 speed auto. You can verify that in Features & Specs on BMWUSA.com for the X1 xDrive35i...

This. Older 6 speed auto for 35i and new 8 speed auto for 28i models.

My spec'd out X1 was a few bucks shy of $50,000, & I am certain I wont be buying it because no manual.

I am sick of compromising, specially when I have money. How hard is it to make/design every vehicle a manual, Or 8-speed trip..? Thus, letting the CUSTOMER decides what he wants? No arguements, nobody upset... just happyness on both sides of the fence.
Americans have to compromise on car because we are not willing to pay the price. In order to be competetive manufacturers have to limit options and/or packages.

@ Fomula M, to add to the 2 posts above:
- in the eurozone, manual tranny is standard on most BMWs, and they pay extra for auto. in the US, expectation is usually no-charge manual tranny
- ethusiasts over there would probably want and X1 with N55 but won't get any, but you can still enjoy the sweet sounding inline 6
- have you tried asking about "special order"-ing your manual tranny? it's an extra fee on top of the tranny itself but if you're willing to pay, they probably can build one for you

Someone please explain this to me?

from the new "explore" X1 on bmwusa.com

Performance
What good is all that space, if you can’t get there quickly?

8-speed Automatic Transmission
4-cylinder TwinPower Turbo Engine in the 28i
6-cylinder TwinPower Turbo Engine in the 35i
sDrive: Rear-wheel drive
xDrive: All-wheel drive
300-hp. 0-60 in 5.3 seconds*

They make no indication of the 8-speed only being for the 28i, and under the model highlights for the 35i it also says

Comfort & ConvenienceFunctionality
BMW ConnectedDrive
Automatic Highbeams
Onboard Navigation System with Traffic AlertsEntertainmentBMW Apps
Harmon Kardon Surround Sound System
Bluetooth Audio StreamingPerformance & EfficiencyInline 6-Cylinder Engine
Electric Power Steering
8 Speed Automatic Transmission
ECO PRO
Brake Energy Regeneration

but then on standard features when building it mentions 6 speed, and under car specs it says 6 speed.

does BMW realize that wrong information like this could get them in trouble, if someone goes into a dealership and orders a 35i because the website says 8 speed and no one tells them its not an 8 speed, I see class action suit.

Also I thought ECO PRO and Start/Stop functions were only for the 28i but several places on their website mention it for the 35i as well.

Ordered my x1 today, 35i m sport pkg. added all pkg except satilite radio.mrsp 50070.00. Split the difference between invoice and msrp with the dealer. As for transmission it would seam it has the 6 speed auto. Will know for certain when it arrives in sept. Color mineral grey with black leather , 19 inch wheel upgrade . Should be a nice commuter car.

Split difference? So like 3.5% off?

Yes, initially wanted to pay only 1000.00 over invoice. but dealer always wants msrp so splitting the difference on price is fare for both. In the past when i had to buy a german car, i had to drive to a larger metro area to get a decent price.

Looking at the bmwusa website again under highlights and transmission at the bottom it mentions "with the optional 8 speed sport automatic transmission." or something to that effect. Makes me think maybe the sport and m sport versions get it while the regular and x line get the 6 speed.

If this is true then the mpg and 0-60 times could be even better than BMW claims if those numbers are based on the 6 speed. I guess we will find out for sure in 2 months.

If it is an 8 speed in the 35i m sport I will be getting that!

Very curious to see what a definitive answer is for the 8-speed transmission on the 35i. Has anyone noticed that when you build a 35i on BMWUSA, the transmission in the interior picture is the 8-speed version? That could be just a mistake on the website though...

yeah if I end up getting an X1 my decision on the engine will solely be based on this! sounds strange but the 8 speed is so much better than the old 6 speed, better MPG and quicker! plus it looks so much nicer!

the way I would build them the 28i would only be $2500 less than a 35i (I wouldn't have to get a few options like the light package on the 35i so the price difference is less, I want xenons but don't give a shit about ambiant lights or auto high beams).

Looks like my choices as of now are as follows:

1)Audi A4 Prem Plus with Nav, Audi Keyless, Prem Sound
$45,370 (plus $800 if I get Audi Care) which puts it $100 shy of the X1
2) BMW X1 28i with ultimate package, lighting package, prem sound, heated seats, M Sport LeMans Blue
$46,270
3)Volvo S60 T5 AWD, loaded with sports rear bumper package
~$43,000 and that includes same maintenance BMW offers

I have only test driven the A4 so far (2013, really nice and I have a C63 and X3 to compare it to). Plan on test driving the Volvo this week and X1 in 2 months if I can wait that long.

What? You didn't see all the posting above with the official ordering and pricing guides that clearly stated the xDrive35i has a 6-speed transmission buddy?

If that's not definitive enough for you, just Google it. Personally, I don't know why people are turned off by the 6-speed transmission. I had it in my 535i xDrive and there wasn't any issues with it. Having said that, I just ordered the xDrive28i with the 8-speed transmission. Some video reviews have already stated that 8-speed may be too much for the car when slowing down to a stand still at a stop sign or a read light so we'll see.

Wow. If you had read the posts above, you would see that I am obviously not the only one who sees the disparities in BMW's advertising for the X-1. Anyway, I'm not turned off by the 6-speed either; more confused I guess as to why they would use that on the 35i and not the 8-speed. Now excuse me while I go and try this new Google thing out...thanks for the tip!
