Wider Tires on Style 421 Wheels?
Hey everybody. My friend is looking to go wider than the 225/45R18 that came on the Style 421 18" x 8" wheels. Anyone running something different with no issues, like 235 or 245? He'd like to keep it square.
Thanks! |

I'm not sure if 421 style is 8"wide. For an 8"wide wheel, they say the ideal tyre should be 225 - 235 and the max. tyre should be 245. If you look at - 1010tyres, their Tyre Size Calculator you can compare all sorts of sizes. 245/40/18 seems to be the closest in Overall Diameter followed by 235/45/18. The 245 would be nice and look good with more rubber on the road. I would be talking to a number of tyre places to see what they say and in particular inside clearance. |

The 421 is in fact 8" wide. I would do 235 as a 245 would be hugely bulgy on that width of wheel.
Don't worry too much about keeping the tires the same diameter as the stock, just make sure they're all equal. I'm running a staggered set up which is almost 1/2" larger than stock, no issues.

Thanks! I agree. My dad has a 650i (E64) and the stock wheels (now off and OEM M6 setup on) were 245/45R18 I think. I'm sure about the 245. Yeah a bit bulgy and the wheels were 8". I have 245 in front of my M3 (E46) on a 9" and it's good, if nearly slightly stretched looking, but almost no one was doing 255 up front. All seems to add up to 235 making the most sense. Thanks again.

I run those wheels with 225/45/18 in front and changed to 255/40/18 at the rear with no problems. The 255 aren't bulging at all, in fact the fit the wheel quiet nicely and better than the 225

Very interesting. I don't think my friend wants to go staggered, so I wonder if 235 is about all you can safely fit up front. Any idea? He may go for staggered, who knows...

The reason I went with 255/40/18 at the rear was to stay within the same rolling diameter as the 225/45/18's, this way I have the same ride height as before. My installer showed me that 255 will fit on a 8J rim fine, visually they sit perfectly flush with the rim and don't bulge at all, I'm running the Pirelli RFT.
I haven't tried the 255's up front, so cannot say if they would touch but I doubt it. However if you go wider rim in front, 8.5J or 9J, then that could be a problem. My 2 cents worth in anycase. |

Thanks! I just talked with him. It seems he wants two things:
1. His stock wheels 2. A square setup (easy rotation, and he has x-drive so maybe AWD cars work better square) So I think it's just a matter of seeing how wide a tire can safely fit up front if we know 255 fits the rear. I'm guessing he doesn't need them that wide. Instinct tells me 235 or 245, but if 255 square works, that's cool too. |

It seems that 235/45 would be fine, and going up to 245 (or 250) might justify a 40-series sidewall. |

Sorry. Please see my new Thread " TYRE SIZES''. I registered and posted reply, it disappeared. I retyped and was told to put title. Not good with computers or maybe mine is getting a bit old in the tooth.

I'm gonna tell you right now that a 245 will look like garbage on an 8" wheel. I have 235's on an 8.5" wheel on the front, and they look a bit bulgy. 235 on an 8" max, otherwise you'll look like a tard.
As for square set ups working better for AWD. Nothing will change really. BMW X-drive will adjust the torque to the tire with the most traction. The split varies from 40/60 f/r for a 28i and 20/80 f/r for a 35i. A staggered set up would actually work better on a 35i. The 28i won't lose or gain either way. But a staggered set up will always look much cooler than a square set up (opinionated). The other thing to consider is the brand of tire. My factory RFT Pirellis looked stretched on the factory 421 wheel, where as my winter Blizzaks look flush. Same dimensions of rubber, one just has a different look to it. My Michelins on my aftermarket wheels have chunkier side walls which also has a different look. If your friend wants a tuner look, buy a tuner tire. If he wants a flush "racing tire" look, buy a racing type tire etc etc. A good wheel/ tire shop will be able to really help him out with making a decision regarding his tire woes.

My X1 came with the 17" wheels with Goodyear RF tires which I thought were a bit harsh. So - I. recently got 18" 322 style wheels and put Michelin PS A/S 3 tires on it in 245/45/18 size. They look fine and don't rub, but I am thinking they might be a bit too big. One negative is my gas mileage went down by 3 to 4 mpg

I change wheel sizes to smaller diameter like 26inch to 25 inch all the time to get more power, but you being bigger means more wheel weight. I adjust miles driven with a scanguage and ignore the cars speedo which is already wrong. |
