Warranty Question - Windshield
On my way into work today, had a rock crack my windshield!!! Will the dealer warranty this? Or cover it under the service contract?

Warranties typically cover defects in manufacturing. Unless you can show that a manufacturing error broke your window, the warranty will not cover it. Your insurance may.

We got a crack in our windshield. The crack showed up only when it got supper cold. It was very low, basically by the windshield wiper blade. Never seen a rock crack that low. I was 99% sure it was due to a rock but talked to the SM anyway - just in case. He said the rock was probably a lob shot thus no damage to the car just the windshield. Given the crack is so low we will deal with it in summer. No sense in replacing it during the winter or spring when rocks are still flying.

slightly OT but these windshields are very "soft" and susceptible to stone chips vs. older car windshield. My 2010 e91 windshield was peppered with cinders during a winter trip and it must have 20+ pockmarks. Very annoying when driving into the sun.
Pilkington made that windshield...not sure who made the front on my X1 (already has two decent stone chips in it) I "assume" its a softer glass due to a random Govt safety requirement.(?)

On my first E90 i got little crack almost under the hood. I went to the dealer for an oil change and when I picked it up the crack had extended all the way to the top of the windshield. Complained to the dealer being their fault since the car wasn't drivable and they replaced it at no cost to me. My second E90 got a crack on the top right at the green stripe. Still drive it like that since it's not visible from the outside (I can get fined). When I got my X1 the dealer tried to get me signed for higher monthly payment and I caught it (always read what I'm signing). To "reimburse" me for the hassle they offered me either free windshield protection or free body damage protection. Without even thinking I accepted the windshield protection.
To the OP question windshield is not covered by the car's warranty like any body damage. Many insurance policies have separate glass damage coverage. |

My dealer offered a very expensive windshield replacement policy. I have Allstate and they will fix rock chips at no charge to the policy holder. If the windshield is cracked and can't be patched then my compressive deductible is all I pay.
If your insurance will not pay for a chip there are kits available at most auto parts stores that work very well if you follow the instructions. Many times when you see a crack you will see a pit very close to the edge of the windshield, this is where it is weakest. |

FYI, Many places, like Safe-Lite will not repair chips that are directly in the driver's line of sight. I had a 2010 TL and had to get a whole new windshield. Worst I ever had was a Honda Element. That thing chipped constantly.

I have a zero deductible for all glass breakage via State Farm. The cost is like $4 a month. My last car went through 3 windshields in 3 years so well worth it. Something you might want as well.
I had a chip "repaired" and found it unsatisfactory so had the entire windshield replaced. |
