US buyers - M135i 5 door instead?
Mostly for the 35i buyers, but open to any who bought an X1, if the 5 door M135 (or any F20) were available in the US, would you have still bought the X1? The M135i is available with a manual or the 8s auto and in both sDrive and xDrive.
It's about five inches shorter, nearly all of that coming out of storage behind the seats, with only about half of the space behind the seats. It's five inches lower to the ground and can be as much as 550 pounds lighter than an X1 35i. It's about an inch narrower in the inside, but has roughly the same seating space front and rear. We bought the X1 because we were tired of the limitations of our two door 135i, might need kid space and felt the F31 was too large. But the M135i would have been more appealing to us, curious if others feel the same way. Interestingly I have no interest in the M235i coupe or convertible coming as they're too close to the car we sold for the X1. |

1: The higher ground clearance and seating of the X1. 2: A 20:80 instead of 40:60 front:rear ratio for the M-sport model X1. 3: Higher loading capacity in both volume and weight. 4: Hydraulic steering. Now, if an X1 M had been made, we would have been talking... |

Xdrive, cool, it has that. But the roads up here can get nasty.

The smaller rear space of the M135i would have been a tough pill to swallow, the X1 is about perfect size wise for us, the smaller 1er would have probably been too much of a compromise, but the lighter weight, rwd and sportier nature would have been very hard to overcome. The X1 was dangerously close to being too small for us - my wife and two young boys. I wouldn't consider anything even a tiny bit smaller.

Tough call. It would have definitely been on the short list for me. Probably would have depended on how much less cargo space there was. We didn't really need a SUV/SAV/whatever, just wanted more cargo space than my 135i, and I love my 135i.
M135i xdrive might have been just the ticket. Oh well, I guess I'll never know. Thanks for denying me the opportunity, BMW. |

As for the X5M, you can't even take it to a track day, as it's too tall and heavy to be allowed on most tracks. I may gain a few enemies here by saying it, but I believe the main justification for it is the "look at me" effect, i.e. it isn't bought to be driven hard but to one-over the Joneses in their Merc. With the X6M, you may have a point, but I don't know how slide happy that one is. |

I would have been really interested in the M135 with the manual if the rear was big enough to throw a 54cm bike into. It doesn't sound like it would fit though. No problem putting the bike into the X1. Guess life is full of those tradeoffs.

i would have gotten the 135i M in a heartbeat over the X1 only *if*
1) the rear seat legroom/shoulder room was comparable to a vw golf and 2) the front end looks much better in person than it does in pictures personally, im waiting for the 2 or 4 series gran coupe |

And I myself ended up choosing between the X1 and X5, and ended up on the X1 because it was more fun to drive. |

I still would of bought the X1... We already have a 2012 135i M Sport. Don't need 2 of them. I like how the X1 sits higher. easier to get in and out of. (I'm 6'3) The X1 was the right choice for me.

I think the X1 is perfect for me, but I understand that others have different needs and that's why BMW makes a good variety of vehicles so we all can be happy.

Um, no, I hate to break it to you, but they make a good variety of vehicles to maximize profits. You being happy is purely incidental.
