My dad has a bone stick FD RX7 with 90k miles. It's still one of the only truly pretty cars to come out of Japan.

+1, no one is going to care about this thing 10 years from now. In 1994 BMW built 150 325iS 'M Technic' cars just before the US spec M3 was released. Today, no one cares about these things and they don't sell for a ton of money. this new ZHP car is going to end up the same way.

Very few if any, since almost everything is mass produced. If you look at the Toyota 2000GT, only 350 built; Ferrari 250 GTO 39 built; Ford GT40, around 100 built.


There were over 6,000 BMW 1M built, i really don't think the left over parts bin special from the E92 M3 with the common N54, in a 1 series body will be 100 times its sticker price in 40 years.

And that Lime Rock limited edition E92 M3 wont be the collector car of tomorrow either.

Another very expensive car, the 1970 Chevelle SS 427 LS6. Only 20 Chevelles were ever made with a LS6 427 cubic inch engine. Finding one with matching numbers is extremely rare, thus the + $million price tag.

Tesla, for the historical significance (and the not so large production number).

The 1M, Lotus Exige, at a very long horizon (that is, after rust has killed the majority of the production) Subi WRX with all the gizmos stock, Golf R32, Megane RS, but all that depends on the survival/aura of the brand in the future. If cars go all eletric, we'll see them in museum, not as collector, but as curiosities from a time past.

In the US, the 1-series with special packages will be collector's editions

Not trying to patronize (since this IS a 1-series forum), any and all 1-series will become collectibles in some fashion. The fact they ran in the US for only ~5 years and in a lower quantity, they will surely be scooped up by collectors out there. To add, we saw some of the last years of the N52, an engine that still manages to get high acclaim. The 2002 series ran for ~7 years and is still high in demand ... I, personally, hope to see the same thing in our 1s.

2015 F-Type R Coupe will eventually be a collector car I think. It's the only model year of RWD before switching to AWD. It has the look and the engine that will help it age quite gracefully. I think the prices will drop as normal for a while, but bottom out at some point and start gaining value.

The Mitsubishi Evo.

Already production has stopped. The questionable future of the company means the chance of another high performance car coming out of Mitsubishi is rare. It has 25 years of rally and racing heritage. It is also a damn fun and fast car to drive. Very analog and raw. Arguably more bulletproof and durable than the Subaru STI. (Subaru has a lot of engine problems) I owned two and regret selling them.

Evo 9s in great condition are already selling for MSRP price or more.

I think it will be rare to find an unmolested one, and even then, the "special" models will be the classic ones.

I think you're confusing "collector cars" and "most valuable collector cars in history". Go to any car show and you'll see plenty of relatively low production run vehicles that are worth a nice chunk of change more than their sticker. A car doesn't have to be worth a million + to be considered a collector car.

TT-RS is holding it's own, roughly the same as the 1M. It does have the unique motor going for it and the next one will likely have a four cylinder.

I'd bet that over the long run, the TT-RS will out perform the 1M since the M2 is likely to ding 1M prices in much the same way that the E86 hit E36/8 S54 prices, even though they had essentially identical motors and the Z3 was more rare.

I'll throw in the car I just bought. The Detomaso Pantera!

Prices have been rising steadily, and the car is finally getting the recognition as the supercar that it is.

In 1970 I think it was the fastest car in existence (164 I think). I have the older "pre-L'' model that has the sharp looking chrome bumperettes instead of the big black pointy front bumper and rear bumper.

The Pantera sported the Boss 351 Cleveland engine, mine is heavily modified and has over 600 HP, and it's a hoot!

For me it's an investment I can drive and enjoy, and I know I'll get my money back or more if I sell (in time).

Once you get away from the as seen on tv collector marketplace you find that the fancy and low run cars aren't the ones that make money. And are you really going to sit on a $50K+ car for over 15 years just hoping to turn a buck? I wouldn't. I'd rather sit on a few cars that I paid $50 total for. Then if one tanks I have others to make up the loss on.
Nostalgia is the number on reason anyone buys a 'classic' car and I'd wager it's going to hold true for years to come. The oh honey remember when we had one transcends generations.
