BMW maintenance schedule
Hey all, my 2013 X1 35i has passed the 10k mile mark. I called BMW service and they told me my vehicle has to hit 15k miles before I get an oil change under the maintenance program. Is this right? I thought I read that BMW revised its oil change interval to every 10k. Since the X1was new, I took it at 5k miles and changed the oil at the dealership. I know some disagree as to when to change out but more frequent oil changes cannot be bad. Are they telling me right?

Supposedly for 2014 models on. Here is the thread that discusses the change
http://e84.xbimmers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=868302 I'd be interested to know what the difference is(according to a dealer or BMW) that makes the 2014 models more needy/deserving of frequent oil changes |

It's all based on CBS or condition based service. My X1 has 8,450 miles on it and it says 3,100 more miles (11,550) or 7/14 which would be 2 years. It won't let you go pass 2 years and same for brake fluid. Basically you get screwed changing the oil at 5,000 miles. Your dealer is probably going by what your car is telling him. By changing the oil at 5,000 you probably extended the change you would have got at 12,000 + to 15,000+. The Mini I traded said over 16,000 miles before it was calling for an oil change. Anybody that bought a 2013 or prior just got screwed by BMW. They don't change the oil intervals unless they are seeing some wear issues due to the turbo heat. Chances are they decided not to take the financial hit to make it retroactive and the PR nightmare admitting that the engine oil should have been changed earlier on all turbo gas engines.

In the US, you qualify for a low mileage oil change every year if you don't hit the mileage based (which as Lucky13 correctly stated, is based on fuel consumption, not set miles) distance. If you paid for the 5k mile change as a supplemental service and didn't have them reset the indicator, your dealer should still provide the "free" annual oil change for you.
As stated, the new oil change interval only applies to 2014 and newer models, many of missed the cuts, even with identical motors. Fortunately for us, we put about 9k miles a year on ours, so it gets a covered oil change every year and under even the new mileage guidelines. |

Nowhere in any written material does it say 12 months so good luck on getting the dealer to change the oil for free. It never even says 24 months but the cars computer is set t 24 months.

Certainly possible, but the three dealers I've used in California and Texas have all done it for each of our BMW's, with no prompting from me.

You got oil changes on your X1 or previous BMW's at 12 months? BMW has changed the program several times, I've bought 14 BMW's over 18 years. I got screwed by Mini when they said oil had to be changed at 12 months and then they wouldn't pay for it when I had it done. 3 months later BMW changed Mini's program due to complaints. In all cases its good to have good relationships with your dealer. The problem with the Mini was my wife had to drive 125 miles to get to the Mini dealer. Needless to say I'll never buy another Mini due to the dealer in Charleston, SC.

12 months is correct and has been this way at least since the 1999 E46. I've had several 12 month changes on multiple BMWs and even a MINI.

Again that's nowhere in writing and if you read the other thread and the bulletin that went to dealers it says the new 10,000 mile 12 month replaces the current 15,000 24 month program.

I change my oil in my BMW at 10.000 km regardless what BMW says.
Once was free, once I paid because I didn't reach what they say. For me is very important to change the oil to keep the car in top notch shape. Especially when it is working at -30, -40 Celsius... |

This is perhaps even more important for the first oil change, where there's more chance of tiny metal particles being caught in the oil filter. No matter what BMW says and pays for, I highly recommend changing more often if you live in a colder climate, drive hard, or both. |

Does this new service interval that BMW switched too apply to our X1? I did not see our model listed unless I missed it. Is this announcement on BMW website as I would like to take it to the dealer? Are there any differences between the N20 and N55 engines for 2013 and 2014 that made them apply this to 2014 vehicles only? It is not making sense this sudden action they made applied to 2014 models.

there have been no changes on the engines otherwise they would have changed the numbers on the models. N55=> N56 and N20=> N21. BMW is going to have quite a Class action lawsuit on there hands if damage happens under the 15K guideline.

I picked up my 2014 this past Thursday from the Performance Center. They spend over an hour going over EVERYTHING about the car. Our guy said oil changes were every 15,0000 miles.

I put on LT 10K Kms (6K miles) on each my bimmers each year (my prior 2003 Z4, and the current 2008 128i) and my dealer has always provided a free oil and lub service every 12 months. I expect the same will be the case for my wife's X1..

the CBS has several variables and the milages changes based on time (days) and miles driven. Currently mine is due when i hit 11,000 as i will not drive close to the 15,000 preset milage. it is not Stated in any documents but the computer service millage on the car changes based on the Conditions.
