a question of curiosity

I was out of town for a few days, and my service light came on. I was hoping it wouldn't do that until I got home, but it is what it is, so I dropped by the closest BMW dealer to see about getting an oil change done.

I'm not sure if I forgot to wash the "Stupid" stamp off my forehead, or if they didn't like the color of my car, or if things are really going badly at that dealership, but thank goodness, I asked before they started what they charged for an oil change.

They offered me a price that I not only COULD refuse, I did...I don't know for sure if my dealer is way off the mark and undercutting their prices or if these guys were just off their nut, but I chose to drive the extra 200 miles back home and get the oil change there.

If you don't mind my curiosity; what are you all paying on average for a simple oil change?

A jug of 0w40 M1 is like $26 at Walmart, another quart at $4, and an $10 filter.

So ~$40, plus whatever you value 15-30 minutes of your time at.

BMW dealers in NJ NY and PA should be ashamed to charge X1 customers between $79 and $129 for inspection, oil change and oil filter. its a ripoff but they warn you that by going to 3rd party servicers and something goes wrong our warranty my not cover any damage. many people pay the fee though.

It's about $100 at my dealer, IIRC. But I'm not paying that...I'll let them do the free ones and I do all the rest

He lives in Canada, and I believe there are laws against dumping the old oil. So add $50 for a spill tank for the first oil change, and $10 to empty it at a hazardous waste facility, plus the trip.

I gladly pay the dealer to change it for me, even if I could do it for less. There are so many ways we don't do things ourselves which we could, but are willing to pay for the convenience of others doing it. Oil changes is one of them for me.

I just drop off my old oil at a Canadian Tire garage...They take it for free. I'm unaware of a disposal fee?

I would normally change my own oil...my Father was an auto mechanic, and he'd roll over in his grave at the thought of his only son paying someone to change the oil.

That said, I don't have a garage, and our city has a municipal by-law prohibiting oil changes on residential streets; at $500. a pop, it's one of the few by-laws the Police tend to enforce.
I normally pay $115...the "crooks" were trying to convince me that they having a detailed look under the hood and from under the chassis was worth an extra $90. before taxes. Since it was in another Province, the Provincial Sales Tax & GST pushed it close to $225. .... an amount I'd grudgingly pay if they had to lift the motor to change the oil, but they don't.

I strongly suspect their shop rate is more in line with the price I normally get stuck with. The impression I had was that they saw a 60 year old, dressed nicely ( I'd been to a funeral), from out of Province & driving a nice, clean, well-maintained car, and saw me as an opportunity to bolster the shop's beer fund. I've sent an email to the service manager and cc'd the GM; still waiting for a reply and/or explanation.

Garage List
$225 is probably very close to what you'd have to pay at BMW Gallery or Calgary BMW. They charge obscene amounts for the oil. I believe I paid around $100 just for the labour and filter the last time I had mine done.

Calgary has a lot of weird bylaws, it doesn't stop me from breaking them. The chances of a cop just sitting on your street waiting "Tom, this guy's gonna change his darned oil on the street today, I just know it" That shit ain't gonna happen. I also doubt your neighbour will call unless your car is on the jacks for a really long time. An hour or so, doubt anyone will bother calling unless you're THAT neighbour.
