Some promising info from John "Bimmerfest founder"

No longer a rumor. My sources at BMWNA confirm the fact that USA will have a "FACELIFTED" X1 in Model Year 2012!!

Model year 2012 specifically, eh? I don't buy it. I could maybe buy mid to late 2012 as a MY2013.

Just found this interesting post by SCOTT26 in the F30 forum...

Cliffs Notes: Diesel 4cyl X1 coming to the US

For one thing in the US it is very difficult for BMW to offer a 3er in terms of how VW position the TDi Jetta. No matter what VW will have you believe the Jetta is not a premium car, neither is VW a premium brand.

For example the US BMW Customer would not accept the standard specification of a typical BMW 320d in all it's basic glory - cloth seats , minimal equipment - that is not the US perception of a BMW and for people to say that "BMW Should do that!" and many have including journalists, it is just not feasible.

A four cylinder diesel will come to the US Market but will be in the X1 SAV.
The next Diesel introduction will be the X3 , but do not hope for 535d and 335d as the lukewarm reaction to the 335d shows that BMW diesel in the US market works for SAV's , less so for core sedans.

In europe , the Geneva show in March will see the 330d and 335d added to the range along with xDrive.

Probably a 218hp 25d model if I had to guess.

Question is - when?

Well, they said it is debuting in the US with the facelift. So I would say late 2012 as a MY2013 when the LCI comes out.

As much as I don't like it, I think it's pretty much a given that we will only receive the 8-speed auto just like Canada.

But they've changed course so many times, we can't put much stock in that information. Furthermore, even if the X1 does arrive then, there's no guarantee the diesel will be available at launch.

My question was really meant to be rhetorical. The only marginally reliable answer at this point is "Eventually."

Oh, believe me, I completely understand your pesimism. However, with the X1 planned to be released at it's mid-life point, there isn't a lot of time left for BMW to bring the diesel option if they say they are... 3-4yrs before the next gen is released. So I would think sooner rather than later. But as you said, with the track record so far about releasing this car, it's better to keep expectations low and hopefully be pleasantly surprised.

As BMW like every other premium wagon manufacturer cannot sell a typical wagon when the the market has migrated to the safety , security and solidity of SUV's. The 3er GT might not make it to the US especially in light with the reaction to the 5er GT which has shown it's surprising sales especially in the all important BRIC markets. Of Brazil, Russia , India and China.

When The Touring is unveiled in late Spring, We should know more.
But when the Touring goes on sale in Europe in September - M-Sport and xDrive will be available from launch.
"Imminent arrival" sounds pretty good to me! Could it be March 2012? I guess they would call it a MY2013. Wasn't there spyshots of the LCI X1 floating around? I don't recall....

I didn't see this info posted here, apologies if I missed it. I saw this on GCF:

Crossing fingers for X1 production staring in March

Those look like X1 wheels.

Ooops, should have updated this thread. Although the wheels look the same, it's the X4 that is coming to Spartanburg:

X4- sweet just what we need- more overpriced, overweight impractical garbage. Hey BMW you've seen Acura's ZDX sales numbers, yes? Good luck is all I can say...

It's not all bad news - SCOTT did recently "confirm" plans for a diesel X1 in the US:

It's all vaporware, I tell ya

We need to see an X1, way more than we needed an X4. Does someone really go shopping for the X3 and think "well, I'd like to spend about $6K more, and give up a bit of cargo room... yeah, X4 should fit quite nicely"

Waiting on this X1 has gotten beyond tiresome. I really hope Mazda gets the CX5-d here faster and blows away sales expectations which I think will happen. This is a company going in the right direction and getting it done with far fewer resources than most others: BMW, Honda...

2012 CR-V with AWD is getting more and more appealing vs. the not-available X1. And the E84 is getting to be a rather old chassis at this point.

I saw the CX-5 at the LA Auto Show and came away impressed. Love the new design styling Mazda is moving towards. If they put the sky active diesel in it with AWD, they might have a winner.

I have heard the same thing from a different source... X1 and Countryman to share a 4 cylinder diesel. X3 also gets diesel. X1 Late fall arrival. Geneva preview of diesels US spec in April at NYIAS.

I consider this other source one of my better ones so I take this as strong indication of what is coming. I waited until after Detroit (coincidently so did SCOTT) because there was some things I knew were coming out of there as well as todays' news about the M cars and X4.

It is going to be a fun year.... but the X1 is coming in LCI form this Fall.

CRV using old engines and new honda chassis/tech is still not as good as BMW no matter how old it is!

I won't argue that, but it can be hard to justify the $15K premium for a SAV that doesn't exist!
