What drives the camshaft?

We were very fond of a VW Passat which we kept for many years, but what finally drove old Dixie down was the cost of replacing the timing belt, which was strongly recommended at 80k miles.
Neglected to ask when we were car shopping; what drives the camshaft on the turbo four? Chain? Belt? Is replacement required at a specified mileage?
Thanks,
Moon

It is chain driven so it should be OK.

BMWs Achilles hill used to be sensors and electronics. Nowadays with direction injected mengines high pressure fuel pumps and carbon build up should be main concerns.
