BMW X1 vs Audi Q5

I know this is a BMW forum and most of us here are most likley to be on BMW side. But how would you compare BMW X1 vs Q5.

I came across a few sites that compare X3 vs Q5, and it's true. I felt they are in the same tier also

However, when it comes to price. A full loaded X1 is very close to a decently-loaded Q5 (at least here in Canada). - I am not looking fancy features, but something like nav, sunroof, xenon lights are pretty standard to me.

What you guys think? Some of you here might say "BMW" is luxury brand and Audi is not. Well, Audi is not bad from my perspective. it might not be in the same tier as BMW in terms of luxury...

There is a lot of price overlap across many models and brands. The Q5 is in a different category and has an interior that is much nicer. If you want size and plush, go Q5.

The Q5 and the X1 while similar in price are two totally different classed vehicles. The Q5 is much larger than the X1. I found the interior to be much more nice feeling, but I found the drive to be boring. The view outwards from the Q5 also wasn't very good, I found blind spots in odd places and the seating position was much too van-like. It drives like the size too, found cornering to be sloppy, with lots of body roll in comparison to the X1.

Really, it's comparing an apple to a couch. One is food, the other is furniture. Not even the same class.

The other things I found was Audi hides a lot of safety features as options when they should be standard features. The dealership here in Calgary was worse than useless. I spent 2 full hours waiting around the showroom before getting the attention of the receptionist to get a test drive. At that point a salesman threw me the keys and said be back in 15. Not my idea of a test drive when I can't ask questions while driving. Overall, I didn't like Audi at all, and that's probably why I have a sour taste for them.

My wife has a 2012 Q5 2.0 Premium Plus and I've got a 2014 sDrive 2.8 so I feel well qualified to comment. The quality of materials (carpet / plastics) in the Q5 is a notch (or two) above the X1. The X1 has a superior sat/nav system (larger screen, non-subscrtion traffic). The Q5 sunroof has a perforated sunshade, so it really sucks in the Texas summer. The Q5 has the X1 beat in terms of throttle response and steering feel (though my X1 has the electric power steering). The X1 is definitely faster and feels like more of a driver's car. The feel/power of the X1s brakes are better than the Q5. You get a power tailgate with the Q5, but not with the X1. The base Q5 stereo sounds better to me than the base system in the X1. In terms of passenger room, they both seem about the same. In the Q5 you get rear A/C vents, but not with the X1. In the USA, awd, leather and power seats are standard in the Q5, but pricey options on the X1. In the Q5, you can now get the sport package (sport seats, paddle shifters, 3 spoke wheel, Audi drive select) for a very reasonable $750, where to get the sport seats in an X1 you are looking at a minimum of $1900 (Sport Line). The X1 averages about 5 mpg more than the Q5. The Q5 comes standard with privacy glass, where that isn't even an option with the X1.

I'd say the Q5 is more comparable to the X3 than to the X1. The Q3 is more comparable to the X1.

So based on your experience, which one do you feel is a better bang for the buck?

So looking at Audi Canada's website, it looks like you have to at least get the "Technik" trim level to be able to order navigation - an eye watering $2,800 option. That puts the Q5 at $51,500. Yikes!

For the X1, the BMW Canada shows that to get leather, you have to get one of the "Line" (xLine / Sport Line trim packages). Also, to get comparable equipment, you need 4 packages - Premium / Lights / Executive / Technology. In Sport Line trim, that puts the X1 right at $50k

You also need to add the maintenance plan that you get included with BMW.
And believe me you need it if Audi is anything like VW.
My TDI cost me +- $1000 per year on services.

Sorry for the noob question, but why is it a waste of time?

I thought they are pretty much similar in terms of price range?

Prices are the same, but you can't compare a couch to an apple.
