I don't get what he is trying to say, here are a few quotes...
For the 228i:
"I’m dumbfounded as to how the 228i could have garnered so much praise. It’s not particularly fast, despite the normally proficient N20 4-cylinder and 8-speed automatic. In “Comfort” mode, the slippery feeling reminds one of a Toyota Camry"
For the X11:
"The X1 was quick, comfortable, quiet, got great fuel economy and actually felt like a BMW"
and
"But the 8-speed ZF auto is so good that I can’t ever say I actually wished for a manual option"

They both have the same 8 speed, which I love BTW.
Not getting the Camry reference.

The 8 speed is ok if you're hustling but a bit rough and ready when cold and in stop/start traffic.

I'll say this much, having shopped for luxo cars the past six months (X-1 for the wife, Q5 for the in law), absolutely staggered as to how refined the Saab 2T is, the gearbox is and how quiet the cabin is at freeway speeds.

For $17,000 with 20,000Km on it, an absolute steal.

I also looked at the Q5 before buying the X1.
The Q5 was very quiet and more luxurious, but it was missing the connected feeling I got from the X1.
My previous car was a TDI with DSG, the ZF feels almost as good as the DSG.
The big problem with the DSG was when you caught it off guard, then you sit with a dead car for a few second while it looks for a gear. And the DSG oil change was like $400 on top of the normal VW dealer gouging.

I had a DCT 135i and for normal daily driving, I didn't care for it. It was great at Nurburgring and for enthusiastic driving trips to the Alps, but that wasn't often enough.

Well said. There are many "SAV" options out there, but few to none can match the X1 for that connected feeling.
