So what are "efficient grip" tires?
I washed by X1 for the first time this afternoon and looked at the tires closely first the first time. Mine come with Goodyear Efficient Grip tires, which I had never heard of before.
For some reason I thought that with the M Sport package that there would be some half-decent performance rubber on the car but a quick check on Tirerack quickly put that idea to bed. I quote: "...are for drivers who want a combination of sophisticated appearance, competent handling". I assume that "competent handling" means that they're pretty crappy.

Sorry for your bad luck. On my X1 M Sport I got the 18 inch staggered P7 Pirelli summer performance, and they are the best tires I've ever had: good grip warm or down to 30 deg f.
They've worn only 2/32s in 8k miles, also. Going to get Michelin PSS next time if I can wear these out before next car. |

In deed our 2014 M-Sport came with Pirelli Cinturato all-season which seem to be half way descent tires and worked well through the winter.

I have the Goodyears on my 2013 X1 M Sport and they are pretty decent, they are as good as or better than the Bridgestone run flats I had on my 2007 E93.

Efficient grip means they're low rolling resistance. So actually, low grip tires. It's what a lot of companies are going to for their fuel sippers.
I had the Pirelli Cinturato P7 when I bought my car. So glad I ditched them for proper winter and summer sets.

Agreed. Once it's time to replace the current Goodyears I'll put on some serious summer tires on the car. Same as you I'll also be buying a separate set of winter tires and wheels later on in the year.

Since my wife drives the X1 she wants run flats so serious performance tires like what my M235 have (Michelin PSS) are out of the question. I'll probably go with the Goodyears again as a replacement although I did replace my E93 Bridgestone run flats with Michelin Pilot Sport run flats that were a little bit better. It all comes down to compromises, safety vs handling vs mileage so pick your poison.

My original tyres were EfficientGrips too. The only thing I found undesirable was a tendency to aquaplane slightly if there was a lot of water on the road. It was never critical, requiring just a little correction with throttle and steering.
I replaced them at 50,000 kms, so they wore well. The replacements were Pirelli P7's which I think are better tyres in terms of steering feel, ride and quietness ... and with no tendency to aquaplane! |

They gripped on a wet freezing day of 30 deg F just before the pavement froze while other people had death grip on steering. They gripped in Germany last June during deluge on autobahn at high speed. They also grip very well dry as well as long wearing; I think I can get 30k miles. You are right! They feel smooth and quiet on good roads. |

The Hankooks started out very soft and only fair in wet and dry cornering, but after 3 years of aging feel hard and slippery, especially when cold. I don't feel any of the bad things people say about run flats. Of course the Pirelli P7's are a real Summer Performance tire that works best in wet or dry, but not in cold under 30 deg f. Go check out TireRack, and read reviews and tests. The X1's Pirelli's are the V rated run flats. |
