I had this before. Did not throw a check engine light. I cleared the code and it never came back. That was a year ago and no issues so...

You try E89 or E90 from INPA main menu?

Gonna bump this back up to see if anyone else has had this code making the CEL/SES light come on.

My readout on this code is slightly different than OP, but I assume it is substantively the same.

0x3490(13456)
"MAP Thermostat, Activation:
Line Break > Currently
Present Warning: Lamp On"

Any thoughts, insights, or experiences greatly appreciated. Code has been cleared and will just wait and see if it comes back on.

I ended up getting this again a couple months ago, but it resulted in a CEL. Ended up getting some real symptoms of thermostat failure (running hotter than usual sometimes) Replaced thermostat and water pump at the same time. Codes are gone and cooling system working great now.

How much did that repair run you?

Is there any way to tell how hot the engine is running? Luckily it's winter in New England, so not a lot of heat stress or cooling systems running. But I am actually selling this car in the next week (hence the code and trying to figure this out) bc I just got a '14 e84 n55. While my n55 has the oil temp gauge on the dash the n20 is just the real time fuel consumption.

Also- correct me if I am wrong - but does this extended warranty cover the repair?

I did the work myself but the parts totalled ~$500 CAD from eBay (all Genuine, new parts)

Not sure if warranty covers it, about a year ago I asked my local BMW dealer in Canada and they told me there was no coverage for the thermostat or pump in my case.

For detecting the temp, I used a scanner (a Bluetooth OBD2 device) and Bimmertools app on my phone. I saw that temps were an issue before actually looking though, as I found the ambient temperature sensor was highly elevated sometimes after coming back to my car after being parked for 10 mins outside. Example, 20c ambient temp when I parked, come back to car and it says 45c. Something wasn't right and it did feel much hotter in the engine bay. Scanning to get the actual coolant temp confirmed it.
