X1 or 328 diesel Sportwagon
I'm in the market to replace a Jetta TDI sportwagon.
Looking at either an X1 or the new 320d diesel Sportwagon coming in the summer. Any ideas out there that could lean me one way or the other? Thanks. Last edited by tpg22; 04-09-2013 at 09:16 AM.. Reason: Wrong vehicle id |

It's the 328d in the US (same as ROW 320d though). It's got a timing belt, so you'd still have the joy of frequent, expensive belt changes, just like your VW. The X1 comes with either the 2.0L N20 or the 3.0L N55, both of which have timing chains and avoid that headache.
The X1 is based on the previous 3er wagon, the E91 and is significantly smaller than the new 3er wagon, the F31. If you want more modern technology and a larger size, the F31 is likely your choice. If you want hydraulic steering and a little smaller car, the X1 is likely the better choice. You can drive any F30 3er sedan to get a feel for what the F31 will drive like. |

Thanks Red Bread. Having a 135 I do like the smallness aspect of the X1. I didn't think of driving the sedan to compare. That idea is very helpful. It would be easy to use the cost difference between the two to buy plenty of gas for the X1.

I'm just surprised so many claim to get only 24-26 mpg in the 28i. I'm coming from 38mpg in the Jetta TDI so I was hoping for around 30. I guess the $5000 difference between X1/328i models I built would buy a lot of gas to cover the lower mileage. I'm also guessing the diesel will come at a premium as it did for the 335d.
I do love driving my wife's 135 convertible (when she lets me). This would be mine, all mine. |

With the exception of the steering, I love the F31, but my goodness does it get pricey with options. You can option the gasoline 28i to over $60k! That's a lot of coin for a 4-cylinder 3-Series. The diesel sounds like a great package, but you know it will come at an even loftier price point.

For the most part - yes. But I am one that has been very disappointed with my fuel mileage. The M Sport suspension can beat you up on some roads, but I prefer the painted trim and staggered wheels that come with the M Sport package. You can search my posts here for more feedback, or PM me for details.

I have a X1 28i and have just started averaging 27-28mpg doing 50/50 highway/city with going 80mph on the highway. When I had less than 6,500 miles on the car I was averaging 25 mpg. So mpg goes up a bit after 6,500 miles or so, hopefully a little more as I put more mile on it.

My drive in to work is all expressway but my speed never exceeds 65-68mph. Most of the trip is in city areas with a 50-55 mph limit. I would never be able to average 70-80mph for that would get me a bunch of 25mph over tickets. I have noticed that most people posting about mpg show high speed averages and that eats gas. Maybe there is hope and I could get closer to 30mpg. I will have to do some research.

40 mph, 34 mpg 50 mph, 33 mpg 60 mph, 29 mpg 70 mph, 25 mpg 80 mph, 21 mpg I'd think that this is especially true for taller vehicles (like SAVs), as drag increases with speed. |
