Extended Maintenance or Warranty?
Did anyone purchase the extended maintenance or warranty for their X1?
I hear the break jobs can be astronomical. For about $2k, it adds 2 years of service and doubles the miles to 100k miles. I do drive a lot, so that would be nice. Just wanted to know if anyone else has done the math on this, and if it has panned out to be a worthy investment. I'm just assuming that the maintenance policy will run dry at 50k miles, and I will probably need new brakes at 51k. Thoughts? What about the extended warranty? (Not really interested truthfully) |

I had extended maintenance on my previous car (E90). I think I ended up breaking even at the end. When I traded my car in it had about 90k miles and 6 month of maintenance contract left, but no major maintenance was due in the next 10k miles other than an oil change. I used it for several oil changes, brake pads and rotors for front and rear (once each), brake fluid flush, and several other minor items. I used to drive more highway miles, if you do a lot of city driving probably you will use it more often (more frequent brake/oil changes).
If you are the type that does all maintenance at dealer and if you buy it with a low interest rate and you are confident that you keep the car close to 100k it makes sense. You will probably break even and the peace of mind makes it worth it. Basically you know all required maintenance is included and everything else is optional. There are some major items that need attention at or after 100k miles (water pump, coolant, spark plugs, tune up etc.), these are not included in the maintenance package. |

About 6 months prior to my free service running out on my last BMW, I started asking around with other BMW owners in my neighborhood about good mechanics. I was very lucky to find a guy who did oil changes and so much more of the other work I needed on the car for quite a bit less than my most convenient dealer (BMW of Manhattan). Jimmy was very up front with me, he was a one man shop, and he wasn't exclusively BMW, as a matter of fact BMW was a small part of his experience, yet he did work on some of them and seemed to be very enthusiastic about taking mine on. Our first meeting was almost like a first doctor's appointment, feeling each other out about car servicing, etc. And he was very honest when he felt a job was over his head, and felt I'd be better off going back to the dealer or a BMW specialist. In the almost 10 years he serviced my car, I only had a couple of issues he declined to deal with me, and only one issue where I had to have him look at something he did that wasn't done right the first time. I feel very lucky I found him, and I am hoping he's still in business in 5 years when my new car's free service ends.

no , because i will sell or trade my ride in almost every three years. that is the best part of owning a BMW is the resale value.. i always make money on the trade or by selling them. but only one time with my E90 i lost money on the trade in becuase of all the recalls it had
