Loved my 2013 X1 so much I traded it in on a new 2015 model. Alpine white, coral red, sport line, premium, lighting, cold weather packages. I know everyone is worried about the 2016 going to a FWD platform and that will be shared with the new Countryman. I don't think you need to worry. My wife has a 2013 FWD countryman S, and that thing is a blast to drive. Check out this video of the next gen X1. I'm sure BMW will still make it fun to drive!

The countryman is a much smaller vehicle than the X1. I think it remains to be seen whether the upcoming X1 will be better than the current. I for sure would rather have an E90 3 series than the current model. I don't think BMW cares as long as the sales are what they expect. I am most concerned about the electric steering more than the FWD or handling. There is something so special with the pleasure and feel of hydraulic steering that simply cannot be emulated.

The Countryman is not a much smaller vehicle than the X1. My X1 and the wife's Countryman are parked side by side every night and they are of very similar size. The X1 is a bit longer and the Countryman is a bit taller, but they are very similar in size. The Countryman actually has more rear seat legroom than my X1. Perhaps you've never seen the two vehicles side by side.

If you'd rather have an E90 3 series instead of the current X1 then that's what you should drive. That's why car companies make different vehicles. We also had an E90 3 series sedan. It was a great car but the X1 offers more utility with the hatchback, the roof rails and the extra ground clearance for the snow.

Yeah, the only reason why the X1 is longer in length than the Countryman is because of the large front hood the X1 has in order to fit the V6 engine. The new model will most likely go to a 4-cylinder turbo only lineup, and so they can cut down the large front end. The rest of the car is similar in size, in terms of the interior space.

And yes, I'm sure it will be a hoot to drive. The Mercedes GLA45 AMG is also front wheel drive biased and also has electric steering, and all reviews I have read are that it is an awesome car to drive. So yes, it can be done.

I have to admit that from the look of the spy shots, it seems like the 2016 x1 looks cooler tho. More sporty.

I was only comparing them on paper. The specs seem to indicate the X1 is larger and heavier:

For the record, I wrote that I'd rather have an E90 3 series than the current [3 series]. Obviously, I just bought an 2015 X1 because that's what I wanted lol. Thanks for letting me know that I can buy what I want though...

Yes, it can be done. Between my wife and I, we've had 6 BMWs. I buy a lot of cars and I always come back to them because nothing else seems to drive the same. We won't know how the new FWD platform with be until we drive it but, from the look of the video, BMW hasn't forgotten about the performance aspect of the vehicle. I mean, let's face it, the X1 isn't a sports car......but that doesn't mean it still can't be fun to drive.

I don't believe the I6 is the reason for the length. The I6 wasn't introduced until it was launched in the US (the I6 is exclusive to North America) and this engine was added 3 model years after the vehicle's initial launch.

That did not sound like the N20 going around the ring... Must be sound clips...

The Countryman's trunk is tiny. Sure you can say it's only a few inches shorter. But a few inches here, a few inches there... it becomes a totally different class! It's the same deal with the X3. Not that much bigger than the X1 but the difference is in the details.

Incorrect.......

The pre-LCI X1 sold in Europe was available in a normally aspirated I6 sold as an xDrive28i. With the LCI in 2011/2012 the xDrive28i went to the 2.0 I4 Turbo, at which point the xDrive35i I6 was sold exclusively in North America starting MY2013.

Thank you for the added background. That is info I hadn't read before.

That is one video peek at the next X1 on the Ring. I suggest you watch it and about a dozen other videos on YouTube to see the range of vehicles. Here's one with it on the street (watch for the driver waving as this is not a stealth video):

If you look under the hood of the X1 28i, you can see that half of the engine bay is empty. They could easily chop about 6 inches from the length if the car had been designed for that engine.

Just a note: I hope they start offering black wheels on some of the cars. I really like that look, and I see you can get black wheels with Land Rovers and Porches, but BMW only appears to offer them on the X6.

Our X1 is a sDrive28i so it has the electric steering and I'd much rather have hydraulic steering.
In a couple years you won't be able to buy a car without electric steering and this makes me a little sad.
