Unhappy X1 Vibration Anyone?

I've had my new X1 for 2 weeks - largely enjoyable except for a slight vibration through the steering wheel in the 100 - 120km/hr range. I took it into the dealer today to get a small paintwork scratch fixed that I noticed during delivery. I've asked them to investigate the vibration. They gave me an X1 loaner - identical spec to mine and damn me, it has exactly the same vibration - even a bit worse.

Has anyone else had this problem? I would like to get some feedback before I get mine back at the end of the week and be prepared for the "we couldn't find anything wrong with it" speech.

Thanks

I don't feel any vibration at all . It sounds a Tire balancing problem to me.

i had the same problem exactly and the dealer said its normal because of the run flat tiers.
Actually, i did not believe so, i went to tires workshop and i checked the wight balance of the wheels and i was all totally out of balance.

after re-balancing of the wights, the vibration disappeared and the car was great.
i went after to the dealer to complain that they did not identify the problem in the first place and i had to do it myself. and they admitted their mistake.

so, your problem i am sure, you need to check you wight balance of your tires with specialist.

My friend and I picked up our X1s from the same dealership on the same day. Yup..we liked it so much we each got one at the same time

Mine had no problem but hers had vibration on the 2nd day after pick up from the dealership. She said the vibration was so great that her whole body shook with the steering wheel (it always happen between 100 - 120km). Brought it in for a check and they said all the tires have flat-spotting on them so the dealer swapped out the entire set and gave her new tires. But she had to bring it back for a second time because the vibration was still there but less noticeable. The second time they road force balanced it and said there were extra weights on them . She is happy to report that the car is now fine...no more vibration.

I would also suggest you bring it to a different dealership then the one you got it from for the check because that's what my friend did. They ran a diagnostic on the tires and identified the flat-spotting issue.

Thanks for this - I can't wait to see what they tell me when I go to pick it up. I'll keep this thread updated with what I learn

Just had a call from my BMW Service rep telling me my car was back from the paintshop and ready to pick up and telling me they could not verify the vibration I reported. She then went on to tell me that all X1s have a very small amount of vibration and it was normal and acceptable. I blew my stack - told her this was completely unacceptable for a BMW - I've had two previous BMWs with zero vibration and if they don't fix it - they can have the X1 back. She's now contacting BMW Canada to report the issue and determine if there is anything they can do... stay tuned!

IMHO, that's a bunch of crap. Knock on wood...mine have had no issue with vibration at all. I would take the car to another dealership to get it checked. Good luck!

good for you! I'm so tired of dealers giving people these loads of shit that there is no problem. Dealers are getting worst..not better these days.Like your supposed to just accept a vibration problem and consider it normal on a BMW....freakin goofs!

That's BS. There is a shop in TO that actually does wheels on car balancing. That will fix any problem. Ask if you can take it to a good alignment balancing shop at their expense.

Today's update.... my Service Advisor called me this afternoon to tell me they are actively working the problem with BMW Canada as they discovered another X1 with the same vibration issue. The good thing is that they acknowledge the problem now. They still have the car and she will update me again on Monday. Given that the loaner I have also vibrates, I'm speculating now whether it's a bad batch of tires, a bad batch of wheels - or something deeper...

Stay tuned

Latest news:
Test drove my car today with a senior BMW technician from the dealership. He was open about the fact that they have identified other X1's in stock with a similar vibration problem. According to him this is the first instance of the problem reported to BMW Canada - so BMW Canada have no proven fix - or even a clear identification of the cause. So, my car is the guinea pig to troubleshoot the problem. Apparently, the X1's the dealer identified so far with the problem are fitted with Goodyear Eagle tires - but they don't seem convinced yet that they are the cause. Well into the second week now and they still have my car. Next step in the process is for them to fit a set of completely different wheels and tires and see if that fixes it.

What brand/type tires were your cars delivered with ?

Both my friend and mine have Goodyear Eagle LS2 on them.

BTW, my friend's X1 just developed the squeaky breaks as well. Looks like she got bad luck with her car.

Yeah, sometimes s&it happens. But it is good of BMW to replace the pads and rotors. But it is only in the front.

hi there, we are in Spain and have a vibration on the steering wheel too but only when in gear. The wheel does not vibrate when the car is moving/ stationary in neutral. I believe the problem is motor vibration being transmitted to the driver.

It's not extremely pronounced, more like a low voltage current being passed to the wrists..!! It's noticeable in city driving but most annoying on longer trips, especially as the steering is quite hard so my write absorb a lot of vibration as they work to move the wheel. Its truly uncomfortable.

I drive a lot of rentals for my work and this is the first time ever that I have this problem. Why on earth do they still use mechanical steering? We have VW a Polo and Gold from the 1990s in the family and neither have vibrating steering wheels.

Another Spanish with steering wheel vibrations.. Everything beguns when i've changed the 4 wheels. I decied to avoid Goodyear RoF and move to ContiSport3 non-RoF just because I need something with more grip, but then, suddenly started my pains..

Facts:
Wheels:225/18/45 91v
Engine: 2.0 Sdrive

1st set of ContiSport3:
60-80km/h steering wheel wobbles..
120-145km/h whole care vibrates..
Several balances with no improvements.
Continental veredict= Whole set out of tolerance (disorted)

2nd set of ContiSport3:
60-80km/h steering wheel still wobbling..
120-145km/h whole care vibrates but much less.
Several balances with no improvements.
Continental veredict= Whole set out of tolerance (disorted by external conditions)

3rd set of ContiSport3 in that case just a pair of front wheels).
60-80km/h steering wheel still wobbling..
120-145km/h As commented before
Several balances with no improvements.

1st Dealer Service:
No evidence of anything that could cause those vibrations, according to dealer must be the wheels. There is no problem to use a non RoF in the X1.

2nd Dealer Service: ( to change front brake pads because normal wearing)
60-80km/h steering wheel still wobbling but has drecased a lot, i can only notice in certain circumstances and paying much more attention than before, but still there..
120-145km/h I can still feel the slightly vibration.

According to dealer, there is no cause-effect between changing the front pads and the vibrations. So it must be that the wheels have been mounted in different position than before decreasing the vibrations..

So after this horror movie, i think that the olny thing i can do its try to balance the wheels mounted in the car instead of do a regular balance..

What do you think?

NB: The car never vibrates when breaking.

I have noted that our vibration occurs around 1.200 rpm.

The dealer took a look at the car yesterday and we have a date to take it in for a more in depth revision but he was able to reduce the vibration moving the something that was passing vibration from the AC to the steering column.

The X1 has excessively hard suspension and apparently over time parts can vibrate out of position. This happened to us during the first week of ownership/ first 600km.

Xblue, Do you mean that your vibrations are more correlated with rpm than velocity? If so, I think we have different vibration sources.

Could you devolope a little bit more: "The X1 has excessively hard suspension and apparently over time parts can vibrate out of position. This happened to us during the first week of ownership/ first 600km"

Which kind of suspension your X1 has? rims size? RoF or convententional?

Edit: I`ve seen the info regarding your car in other post.

Yes, I believe the vibrations are more correlated with rpm, but the dealer has to confirm this. I suspect that the sources of vibration are different.

It is my opinion, of course, but I feel that the X1 has excessively hard suspension. I travel a lot and drive a lot of rentals for work, nothing compares to the X1 for a bone shaking experience. It actually makes the family sick on motorway journeys!

The car is pretty standard: MICHELIN Primacy HP 225/50 R17 94 H which are not Zero Pressure (runflat) Suspension is normal, I truly can’t imagine why anyone would want harder suspension.

Hey guys
When you say vibration is the car Idle ? I don't know if this is the same problem but today I was sitting in my x1 while running trying to get my I-Phone to sink with bluetooth via audio. (no luck) and my motor was idling around 16-17 rpm and a vibration or rattle started up from like in the motor area right below the windshield wipers like under the hood....it would stop when i put the car in D and then start to drive. When I would come to a stop the sound would start back up. Also is it normal for the car to want to take off when the brake is depressed as I almost ran into a car that stopped in front of me as my foot just slipped off the petal and the car took off kinda quick. other than that the car seem fine

Xdrive 20d Auto.just been on a long drive and notice the steering wheel vibrates and droning sound at 2200-2400 rpm in any gear before shifting(auto).its particularly annoying because on top gear its on around this rpm(2200) to stay legal(70mph) so you constantly have the vibration and droning sound.worst even when going uphill, its like losing power quickly,so i end planting my foot down which makes the noise louder just to keep up.please help
