Dash vent temperature question

With the cooler weather I've noticed the dash vents on my 2014 2.8 xDrive always blow cold air unless the climate control setpoint is set all the way to max (84F). The 3-series I've owned have all had a manual hot/cold adjustment for the dash vent temp. Our X1s don't have this feature, and mine behaves as if it did and is always set to cold. Has anyone noticed the same? When cold outside (below say 50F), can you get warm air from the dash vents without the climate control set to 84? If this is by design I will not be a happy camper.

I can get warm air to come out of the vents without turning the temp dial all the way up. Only thing I need to do is switch off the AC button.

^ what he said. But even then, I like a bit of cool air even when the temps outside are below 30.

Oddly last night the air temps were in the 70s and the air coming in felt warm, stale, and recirculated. We just had the fan on and the temp set to 60. We played with the A/M on the recirc which did not seem to change anything significantly. When we tired auto - of course that kicked the AC on which we did not want. So we turn that off and left the auto on which seemed to finally give cool outside air. We need to go back and figure out how to get plain ole outside air without any HVAC.

I don't think there is a way to get natural air flow from outside without the HVAC being turned on. It's a complaint I have had since I owned the car. When the vehicle is at speed, the X1 should get free flowing air in the cabin but I never feel air coming through dash vents. I don't think the system is passive. I think the fan has to be engaged. There is no button that allows air to flow in the cabin w\o fan assistance. Can anyone confirm?

I think you are correct. With that big pollen filter on the intake I don't see any way that air would flow without the fan running.

I have noticed same thing. Air does not get warm unless temp dial turned all the way up. And do not get any fresh air unless fan is on. Tends to make windows fog up a bit.

A design flaw. Can't stand having to turn blower on or roll down windows just to get fresh air.

So today I RTFM. The recirculation button has three settings (i thought only two):

1. Manual auto-recirc. (M lighted) Air will be recirculated regardless.

2. Auto-recirc. (A lighted) Outside air will brought in until the filter thinks it sucks and then will recirc.

3. No recirc. (nothing lit) Outside air will brought in regardless.

To get 3 one press the recirc button quickly twice.

Thanks for that! I was wondering what M/A/off was.

Thanks all for the replies, though it got a little off track with the recirc discussion.

So tonight the temp outside was in the upper thirties, and what do you know the dash vents were blowing warm air without the climate control maxed at 84F. Apparently BMW doesn't think we need warm air from the dash vents until the outside temp drops below 40. Me thinks the designers should spend more time gripping a 42F steering wheel.
