Winter snow 18 or 17 ...

We have 8"x18" wheels square set up with stock Pirelli all-season RFTs and I am trying to figure out the best route for some snow tires. I am thinking about picking up a second set of wheels.

One route is a used set of stagger 8"x18" and 9"x18" which are the same style as the current wheels (so would then have 6 - 8"x18" and 2 - 9"x18"). I would use the 8"x18" for winter and the others for the summer.

Pros - similar wheels, could keep one in the trunk as a spare when needed.

Cons - would need two new summer tires for 9"x18" as I do not think it would be wise to stretch the rft 225/45/18 on to the 9"x18".

My other option is a set of 7"x17" or 7.5"x17" wheels and go with 215/50 tires.

Pros - slightly narrower tire for the winter.

Not really any cons that I can think about other than another set of wheels. But I have storage space if I got a spiffy tire rack mounted.

How much of an advantage would there be in going with the staggered wheels for the summer? Though currently all season RFT I would probably go to non RF at some point.

I could also punt and see how the car does this winter as it has all season tires but it is the wife's car ...

I would appreciate feed back from folks as my search gave a bit of help but still left me stuck.

I kept my stock 18's for winter and slapped a set of Bridgestone Blizzaks in the factory 225/45 18. They work just fine.

As for a staggered set up for summer, there is no real performance advantage as the xdrive cars have plenty of grip and the sdrive doesn't make enough power to get crazy wheel spin either. It does however, look badass.

I have a staggered set on order, 19x8.5f 19x10r.

If you're gonna get another set of wheels get 17s for winter. Taller tire sidewall is better for the snow, slush and mud. They will absorb the bumps better, as well as being more narrow to cut through muck and brake better.

I just picked up a set of studded Pirelli Winter Carving Edge Run Flats. I have the base model x28i, so they are 17" on my original rims. No snow driving yet, but they sound mean both inside and outside the vehicle. Whiny. As long as the roads stay open, they'll get me through whatever comes my way.

If you plan on sticking with RFTs for winter, there are many more RFT options in the stock 17" size than 18".

I plan on going 17" RFTs for my winter set up when the time comes.

In your situations, I'd personally use your current wheels until they're worn out and then get new winter tires on them and then get a lighter weight wheels and summer performance tires for summer. What wheel and tire really depends on your driving style. The staggered setup has a LOT of understeer, especially on my 35. I liked the wheels because they were different and I might pick up a little more traction on hard accelerations but I also like to corner fast and the understeer is pretty strong. If I didn't care about wasting money I'd get wider tires on both front and rear, but stay square.

For tire type, I'm in your neck of the woods and I have the summer performance staggered option (horrible Goodyear Efficigrip tires) but just bought a winter wheel set from tirerack. TR didn't have a 215/50 option for the X1 that worked so I ended up with 7.5" wheels, square setup, and 225/50/R17 Dunlop 4D Winter Sport tires, go-flats. The Dunlop M3 winter RFT (They discontinued the M3 go-flats as the 4D replaced it) are really good tires but since my winter set will last many years, I don't trust the M3 RFT to be around then so it was 4D for me. Dunlop also makes 4D RFT but TR doesn't carry them (Walmart and others do) but as nice as RFT could be for winter issues, I decided that not having a flat in countless years, I'd do go-flat for the better performance, comfort, and save the cost difference for go-flats vs RFT for a new tire if it happens. And keep my phone charged if there is a problem.

Some other local BMW owners really like the Blizzak lm-32's. In my research (including many European sites that seemed to have more and better reviews of Blizzak, Dunlop, Conti and other winter tires) the 4D's outperformed in ice, wet and dry and were just a fraction worse than Blizzak in deep snow. And if I were doing all-season it would be Conti DWS.

Just my $.02

Thanks for all the thoughts. At this point I have vacillated enough that I think we will run the stock this winter and see how they do. The tires have less than 3K miles on them so plenty of tread. That will give us a data point on which way we should go moving forward. I think if I had found a set of 17 wheels I really liked I would probably jump on them but so far I really like the 355 style wheels.

I was surprised to find out my tires were not offset on my 2014 x1 x28i m-sport. It came equipped with Continental Contact SSR 225/45 run-flats, which to my delight perform beautifully. So I put Blizzack's on for the UTAH winters and must admit it took a few weeks to adjust to them, but really am still a fan. I had them on my G35x last year and could go anywhere with them in the snow. As soon as spring hits I will buy a second set of wheels, but like BeMedoubleV I'm stuck in what to do; keep the stock Continentals and buy 18" wheels or switch it up. As for snow tires I will still recommend Blizzak, just know the level of performance is different but acceptable. Some one else has an X1 in Utah. I haven't seen any of you all.

Same here, good handling, haven't tried them in snow since I bought a Winter wheel/tire setup from Tire Rack before I took delivery of my X1>>

215/55R17 General Altimax Artic (great reviews....never had them before) mounted on lighter than factory Axis XMX 17x 7.5" wheels. The TPMS sensors didn't even trigger a TPMS reset when I installed them today.

I'm going with 17x8 reps and 225-50-R17 non-runflats; studded Nokian Hakkapeliitta 7s. Got the tires today, wheels on Tuesday, and we pick up the X1 on Thursday.

Bump... it's about that time. Looking at the Rial Salerno, BBS SR, or ???. Is the brake clearance on 17s enough (M line xD35)? some of them look really tight, although tirerack sells them so presumably so. I'd be fine with 18s, but I'm not seeing many winter performance tires in the 225/45/18 size. Is it too early in the season for availability? I'm mostly looking at tirerack.

I will probably get the Dunlop winter sport 4D (non-runflat). I liked the feel of the winter sport M3 on my last car.

Tire Rack is currently out of winter sport tires in 225/45/18, and there is no scheduled restock. How do I know this? They screwed up my order when I bought 4 Dunlop 4D's in September and only received 3 in the correct size. I didn't notice the mistake until last week, when I went to get them mounted. I tried to get a replacement from TR, but was told they have none in stock and nothing new expected. I tried to replace them all with a set of Sottozeros, but again they had nothing in stock in this size.

I was finally able to order a replacement singleton from simpletire.com. So if you really want a set of 4D's, I'd suggest checking them out.

Just swapped my 18" Continental Run Flats with 17" Bridgestone Blizzak tires. Was told the 17's would be better for winter.

I've only had the winter tires on for 3 days but noticed the drive was much better than with the run flats. Just wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience? I've only had the car for a couple of months, had one flat tire already which was ridiculously expensive to replace (first flat in 20 years of driving). I get the advantages of RFT's, just not a big fan so far.

It's not just the run flats, winters are a softer and more compliant rubber plus you likely have more sidewall. Razor thin sidewall is insane, the difference say 113mm (225/50) vs 101mm (225/45) makes is startling.

I guess I should give an up date to my own thread. I picked up a set of BMW Style 350 Wheels. They are 8x18 ET30 (same as the OEMs). Still heavy compared to most other after market wheels but the wife liked them (The X1 is her buggy). The 350s were originally made for the 5er F10 series. We tossed the OEM RFT on these wheels as they still had 5/32 of tread on them.

I took the original 355 wheels, spiffed them up a bit, and tossed a set of 225/45R-18 Michelin X-Ice tires on them. But here was the kicker, last winter was a non winter so I never bothered to put them on the wife's buggy.

So in the end we stayed with the original OEM wheel/tire sizes. Still plenty of side wall and at 8" they are not that wide. When the RFT are toasted I might look at putting some summer 245/40-18R on the buggy. A bit fatter but pretty much the same diameter. Just not just how they might look on 8" wheels.
