What's your understanding based on? I really hope you're wrong (and I'm guessing you do too!)

Um, the article says that it is an 8-speed auto rather than 7.

Interesting... The article does not provide the same information whether you read it in Toronto or Calgary. Damn. What do you think Kato ?

Well I hit the sentence that said manual, got excited, then came back here. Personally I don't care about auto and heard elsewhere that it was 7. Ooops.

No problemo. I am personally looking forward to the 8-speed here in Canada.

Yep, it will be the same 8-speed auto as fitted to the 5-series and X3.

The 8-speed auto in the X3 is a steptronic box. As far as I know the DCT is 7-speed and only used in BMW's M-versions (not MSport).

I hear that! Americans are too busy with their stupid cells phones & Latte's to drive a manuel! It's getting allmost impossible to find manuels in any cars. If I can't get it in the X1 I'll just keep my X3. Guess you'd have to order the car special. Ever watch the show from the UK "Dangerous Drivers School"? Don't think I'll ever seen a single automatic car in the whole first season. Only it will probably come with the steering wheel on the right side. That will fun, driving with my left hand on a stick?

The manual is awful and ruins the car, why the hell would you want it??

I have an X1 manual by the way.

This is not a 911, this is a station wagon on tall springs, I just don't see why you would choose a manual 'box over the auto.
In the UK the difference between the 18d sDrive manual vs the 20d sDrive auto when it comes to the amount you pay in personal tax makes going manual worth while, but I would never choose it out of choice.

I was interested in the X1 not being in the States, maybe something to do with pricing?
The more expensive models seem to be heavily subsidised stateside, the 28i X3 is $36k which is £23k.
The 23d X1 auto is £31k over here which is $48k.

The X3 30d manual is £37k which is $58,000.

The smaller cars have less margain so less room to subsidise them, what price will the X1 be? Will it be a big difference to the X3?

Anyone have an update on when we can expect the X1 in the US. The last estimate I saw was the end of 2012 or about 12 months from now. It didn't make a lot of sense to introduce it here at the same time as the Countryman (Mini) and the X3 at least from a marketing standpoint. This is the biggest market for the Countryman so I'm sure they didn't want to hurt it and they make much more money on the X3 since its made here. Another year and these two will have peaked on the bell curve and new competition ie Q3, Evoque and Cajin will force it to be launched to compete.
