Which type of cotton-pickin' windshield do I have?
My 2013 X1 sDrive20i has developed a long crack in its windshield and Geico list four possible replacements types from their buddies at SafeLite:
1) “Green Tint Solar” - $350.72 2) “Green Tint, Gray Shade Solar - $340.80 3) “Green Tint Rain Sensor, Solar” - $498.95 4) “Green Tint, Gray Shade Rain Sensor, Solar” - $407.61 I'll be jiggered if I can detect on the original windshield anything resembling "green tint," "solar," or "gray shade." It does have a rain sensor, but then all X1s do. Apparently the pros can determine exact windshield type from the last seven digits of the VIN. In case a parts professional is reading this, the last seven are: VW43465. My goal is to have SafeLite install a windshield identical to the current one. I realize it will not be OEM but to me, quality of installation is the most important factor when replacing a windshield. Thanks in advance if anyone can help. |

The gray shade is the 3 inches at the top of the window. I went with OEM glass but opted without the grey shade.
Notice you can see the headliner/sunvisors in one but not the other. New, No Grey Shade: Old, Grey Shade: |

I had my windshield recently replaced - went with the green tint rain sensor. I might have gotten a crappy install - the car seems substantially louder above 40 mph.
