coolant low?

Last week the low coolant warning light came up. This came on again intermittently (at startup) so I brought it in to the dealer for a coolant top up. Although I had only driven about 15 minutes to the dealer, the coolant reservoir cap was "hotter than normal" and we had to wait about 10 minutes for it to cool down so there would be no splatter etc Then, it looks like the level really wasn't that low...topped up with perhaps 50 ml of fluid.

No more warnings for now and no suggestion of overheating. Anyone have similar experience or thoughts?

Garage List
Somebody had this problem a long time ago. I think it had something to do with the reservoir.

Note that mixing different types of antifreeze/coolant can cause clumping, which in turn can cause the warning light to come on due to restricted flow or high temperatures.

You may want to check with a dipstick, and do a flush and refill if there's clumping.

Vehicle is about nine months old and has not yet had first service. I did a quick forum search and found nothing. I remember some discussion here about some X1's being delivered with low levels of coolant? but could not find that. Any further thoughts appreciated!

I had a coolant level problem and believe I posted about it. Many months after purchasing the X1, the coolant light came on. Got it into dealer. It was definitely low. SA said it could have been that the coolant "settled" after appearing full at manufacture.

At that time I was using EcoPro a lot, especially on the freeway. I did some research, and some folks claim that EcoPro will sap coolant. So I stopped using it, which I was glad to do anyway. And my MPG have basically stayed the same, maybe even improved a little (lifetime tank average at 23000+ is 28.3).

No occurrence of the coolant problem as yet. That may have no connection to using or not using EcoPro. I'm due for some checkups in a few months. We'll see then if coolant is still good.

Hi Mullini, I did find your post..thanks. I've never used EcoPro and the coolant really wasn't that low - the indicator just came up - so I'm not sure. Anyways all seems fine for now. When I bring it in for service, I'll mention this and if there is anything pertinent I'll post a followup.

Sounds more like a sensor issue more than a coolant level problem?

The same thing has recently started to happen on my wife's x1 (a 2014). I am going to stop at the dealer today to pick up some coolant to mix with distilled water and then see how much it was low tonight.
