Dirt on tailgate lid

I have a 2014 X1 in Mineral white, after any type of rain light or heavy there is a build up at the bottom of the hatch and hatch sill that looks like graphite colored dirt. It easily wipes off. Does anyone know if this is the dirt from the window & hatch or could it be somthing else since it is not a dirt look but rather the graphite type dirt I described? It has a grayish hue to it.

It's brake dust.

I've got the mineral white also, and I noticed the gray or black brake dust was even up the sides of doors.

After 5500 miles, 6 months old, and one track day, I think it has settled down, but that lip is full of red sand from the local desert.

Yeah it is annoying especially as it gets sucked up into the running boards, did not think it to be brake dust. Also with the Mineral White it need frequent cleaning.

I have Mineral white as well...

it is also likely to be some residue from the wiper blades , especially if they are older than a year... Exposure causes the rubber to break down and the wiper blade is actually coated with a thin layer of graphite...

Run your hand under the blade and if you get a black streak, this is the likely cause

^There is so much brake dust that I found it all along the top side of car a few days after US delivery.

I drove it easy and fast up to 120mph in Germany, and a track day at 3500 miles.

I use the pulse and glide method of braking to get good mileage and go easy on brakes, except for track day where I tried to see if they would fade from 90 mph down to 30mph.

Brakes never felt wrong, just stopped hard without fade for 15 minutes.

I believe that track day bedded the pads, and the dust seems to be less except on wheels.

I get same residue on mine and it's not brake dust. My wheels will be clean and the boot hatch will be soiled. It's merely road grime and dirt...same thing on my Audi Q5, MINI Cooper, Golf TDi...and I'd expect the same on any other vehicle with a hatch.
At least that's my experience.

I also have a Mineral White X1 and this dust accumulation. I think there is something about the aerodynamics of the X1 that causes road dust (which includes a fair amount of brake dust from other folk) to accumulate all across the back end of the car. Switching from a Subaru Forester, I notice this accumulation is much greater on the BMW. Also, I find I have to use the back wiper at least four or five times more often on the BMW when it rains than I did with the Subaru.

Bingo! Had the same dust on X3's and Mini Cooper Clubman. It's just the design of the hatch that collects dust. It's not brake dust as my X1 has very little on the wheels compared to my E93.

My X1 collects dirt in the same place.

Yeah...my E92 was really bad with the brake dust. The ceramic pads BMW uses nowadays makes a huge difference...though I do miss that awesome initial bite from the "dirty" pads.

Yea, hatchbacks don't generate a laminar flow as the air passes over the rear spoiler with enough speed. It actually creates a turbulent flow that can kick dirt back and swirl it around. When I clean the lady friends GTI, it is about 3x dirtier than every other part of the car, even worse if it was ever driving in rain.
