looking to buy a 2014/2016 X1 35I

Looking to buy a 2014/16 X1 35i. Is there any known issues I should be aware of? Any insight would be much appreciated. Thank you in advance.

2015 was the last year of the 35i

What turbod said, regarding years of the 35i.

No real issues with the N55 motor that I'm aware of? Anyone else?

For N55 info I'd skip over to the 1, 2, 3, & 5 series forums as they have a much larger sample base to follow. It's the final iteration of the N54 variant before BMW moved to the new modular and excellent B58 turbo-6.

Note that x35i gets the older PRND style 6-speed as opposed to the advanced ZF8. I never quite understand the rationale as other n55 equipped cars had either the awesome DCT and ZF8. Maybe BMW just wanted to clear out old 6spds?

I've heard the ZF8/N55 combo wouldn't fit in the E84 chassis. Don't know if that's true or not, but that's the primary reason I've heard.

That doesn't hold water considering the m235i which is smaller comes with ZF8. Not to mention the diminutive 135i got the 7speed DCT! At least put that in!
Maybe it came to cost and overstocked 6speeders.

Well... it's not all bad. XHP3 can make the shifts pretty darn quick.

I looked at a 2014 X1 35i, that was CPO at a BMW dealer. I noticed in the service history that the transfer case was changed at 35k miles.
Current miles are 37k.
Is this something worrisome and should it affect my decision to buy?

Well the xfer case lineage started with the ATC300, found in older e9x Xdrive 3-series. At some point it was replaced by ATC350. IIRC the X1 is equipped with this model. Final iteration is the ATC35L per realoem.com I would think late model year X1s will have this model.

Is it better....

You can probably do a search on xfer case issues. Regardless xfer case fluid change is highly recommended for prolong life. It's a beotch to do unfortunately.

While I've always thought it was a cost-savings thing...

Not talking about the overall size of the car...but of the tunnel, etc. of the unibody. Word is it doesn't fit when paired with the longer 6.

Someone with access to both should measure from the engine/trans part line to the firewall.

Remember that the E84 is more related to the E90. The E90's used the 6AT, not the 8sp. Not surprising if the 8sp is a tad larger, it would be a poor fit with the N55 in that chassis so kept what already fit.

The N55 is quite lovely in the E84, only wish it had a manual

+1 None of the "E" chassis cars had N55 + 8spd AT combo, and we're lucky enough to have gotten the N55 in the first place in north america (I believe it was not sold in other markets, where N20 was the most powerful motor)

No issues that I know of, OP, other than being hard to find. I personally like our '15 X135 a lot, and had the combox retrofit done to be able to keep using BMW Apps. That feature really helps to keep the car feeling a bit more up to date, despite having in-cabin tech

A couple of thoughts (not issues):
  • 20mpg in 50/50 driving, and 25mpg on the highway
  • 6spd AT is dated. If this was my only car, I would look into Alpina or other gearbox flash
  • I'd personally plan to switch the 19 wheels to 18 or 17s. I have 17s with winter RFT now and like the steering weight and impact damping a lot
  • try to get the HK stereo

Love the car. hope you can get one
