Great tip for accessing the switch. Hardest part of the whole thing was getting the button out to cut the tabs off.

BTW: would you know about how many clips there are (6 based on the number of red lines you drew)?
I do not know exactly how many clips there are. Removal was quite painless for me, I just started below the vent, gently released the clips below it, and then moved above the vent and release the clips up there.

Putting it back in took a bit more scrutiny of which piece of plastic was falling where, and gently easily the piece back behind the trim. All in all very easy though.

And! If you are really worried about hurting things, a plastic trim removal tool is your best friend for stuff like this! They are cheap and easily found at any automotive part store.

I did it today and I think there are only three.

Anyone in my area (NYC/NJ) do this mod yet? I would like to see how it looks like first before I start taking things apart, any help?

I'm not completely sure what you mean. The light assembly looks identical before and after. The lights in the back look identical - except when you turn on the rear fog light, which you should only do in extremely low visibility situations. Wheres does the "look" of it come into play?

I would like to see how it "looks" to see if its worth it to ME to go thru the trouble of removing and dismantling my headlight switch and to see if I can live with a blank switch that turns on fog lights that obviously BMW didn't want the US market to have. On the SAAB 9-3 XWD I just traded in for this car, I can count the times I used the rear fog light on both hands, yet SAAB had no trouble including it into their cars.

Got to use mine today in some fog up in the Alps. One thing I noticed is that the rear lights won't respond to the switch until either the headlights are on or the front fog lights are on.

I'm worried that nine out of ten doing this mod don't know when to not use rear fog lights. They're only meant to be used when fog or snow is so thick that it's necessary for the car behind you to follow you at slow speed. If used incorrectly, they're a real hazard.
Given that most American's can't figure out when to use front fog lights, I fully understand that the more dangerous rears are disabled, and I sincerely hope that those of you who do the mod won't turn them on in mild fog, rain or snow, and be extra hesitant to turn them on after sunset.

Can you see more than one car in front of you? Turn off the front fog lights.
Can you see more than the lights of the car in front of you? Turn off the rear fog lights.
Is it pitch black? Turn off the rear fog lights.

50 yards visibility is what I've been basing my usage on. In the islands on Puget Sound that happens from time to time.

Excellent point. I used them a few times when I worked in Frankfurt and the fog was extremely thick at dusk and dawn. But around here and when I lived in California, the yahoos driving Jags and Audii with them lit up on clear nights is really annoying. Jags have some absurdly bright ones, they're brighter than their engaged brake lights, which really doesn't seem like a good idea.

The only time that I can see a need is during one of our white out snow storms. These come up unexpectedly in Colorado.

Oh, it's a really good idea if the drivers were only using them in fog or snow so thick that you have to drive in convoys, or you'd lose the road.
And there are parts of the world where this is frequent, and locals are so used to it that they know what to do.
I remember back in Europe, we had a clear plastic cling that would attach to the inside of the windshield for use when fog was so heavy that the car's heaters at full blast couldn't possibly keep the windshield from fogging up. It lowered the dew point enough that water would run down the inside instead of fog. And yellow fog lights angled down to spot the road markers, for the unlucky times you didn't have a car with rear foglights to follow.

But unfortunately, almost everyone who drive with fog lights here in the US do it in conditions where they shouldn't be on. Usually the same people who stop and then turn on their blinkers, and are unaware of the generic yield-to-right rule for unregulated intersections. Sometimes I think that driver's licenses can be bought through mail order.

Put in the chrome trim Euro switch I linked to above. Anyone who wants my modified stock switch, it's on a certain auction site for cheap.

Just want to say "Thank you Guys". Last night I did it in 15 min. using the accaess door on the side. The longest part are try to unlatch the clip and try not break the two black clips holding the button in place. This is one of my best free upgrade. BTW the lights are BRIGHT.
