Paddle Shifters

Am I the only one to order paddle shifters? I went through the pictures on autotrader showing new X1's and couldn't find a single one with paddle shifters. Granted that the dealers probably could care less but having never had them before I thought they might be fun to use every once in a while. Anybody order them or have them on an existing BMW?

Paddle shifters are nice, but I find that I instinctually reach for the stick to use manual mode more often.

I've gone through this debate on the X1 and we'll be going without the paddles. My wife will be the primary driver and she'll never use them. I decided I can just use the stick if I need to shift. I have fancy paddles on my M3 (better paddles anyway) and we don't need it on the X1. Now if the sport steering wheel was not standard, but instead was packaged with paddles, we'd be getting them.

Haha, yeah, BMW actually missed out on squeezing us an extra few hundred by not bundling the sport wheel with the paddles. Shocking, my take is even if I don't use them alot $120 is worth it for second hand sale if someone is looking for them...

So I know this is a dumb question but since I have a 335 manual how does the sport mode work with automatic? My wife's trade is a manual Clubman S so moving to an automatic will be a change. Do you just push forward on the gear shifter or pull back?

I have the paddles on my 335 right now, I almost never use them. It may be in my head but it seems like there is more of a delay if I use those vs. the shifter.

Plus BMW did the disservice of making both paddles the same: pull to up shift, push to downshift. Every other car maker is left down right up. Anyhow, I use the center shifter much more.

Just push the stock to the left to put it into sport mode and push forward and back to shift.

I have the 09 as well, and the paddles are as described. I believe that was changed for 10, with the left paddle down and right up. The 6speed console is left for manual/sport mode, and from there pull for up, push for down.

When in D just push the shifter to the left, then it will enter S mode, but when you move the shifter upwards(downshift) or downwards(upshift) it will instantly enter M mode.

There isn't a $120 charge when your order the M Sport. I did order it. I have them on my 128i as well and use it everyday. I love manuals and like to control when the car shifts; the automatic sometimes shifts too late for me. The new 8sp however, seems to be a lot better in terms of gearing.

As others have said, + on right, - on left. BMW used to have dual shift paddles (where both left and right would have +/-) but it just didn't make sense.

No charge because you don't get them on the X1 I believe, nor can you option a heated wheel... I'm hereby declaring all of these lines a needless spend for mostly fluff. Fine you get a sport suspension and you get to over 130 (like anyone ever will) but for the 3k M sport to be the only way into that is complete bs and I'm fully outraged and will boycott them.

I have a dumb question, too. When the shifter is in S mode, does it auto shift if I do not manually move the shifter upwards or downwards? The reason I asked this question is that I heard that the auto start/stop feature sometimes is annoying, but the engine does not auto shutdown in S mode. I am just wondering if in S mode, I have to manually move the shifter to make the car go.

Yes - the car will shift while in S mode. Only when you 'manually' shift the car will it go into M mode.

Thanks,
dr
