Auto high beams and start/stop issues
My sport s28i auto high beams seem to operate randomly...dimming properly with on-coming cars and doing nothing at other times. They also have an annoying pause to return to high beams. Also, the start/stop function operates flawlessly most of the time, but then is off at times. I cant seem to pin down the reasons why it decides to not shut down. A cold engine is understandable but at other times there doesnt seem to be a good reason.
Does anyone else have either of these issues? |

It won't shut down if you lightly put the brakes on when you stop. Light pressure keeps the engine running but I don't know if this is what you are experiencing.

Maybe when you think the ASS is off, in fact it is when the A/C has been turned on. A/C draws a lot of current from the battery, so the ASS will keep the engine running in order to top up the battery.

Weird how I commented on this the other day and mine quit working today. The same basic driving conditions as normal and I tried turning it off and on and everything I could think of and it would not shut the engine down.

Having just bought my X1 last Friday and spent some time with the manual, one line quoted above really caught my eye:
"Certain vehicle components may experience additional wear as a result of this system." I wonder what BMWs have had the ASS system the longest, and if there is any evidence as yet which parts my wear out sooner than expected? It almost makes me wonder if there's a scenario under which whatever long-term gas savings would be negated by more maintenance costs. I have to say, that with my "anticipatory" right foot, I tend to be able to get the engine on again just as a light changes. So I haven't found the ASS obtrusive. On the other hand, when I am a good boy and use "Eco Pro," I really feel as if the car has suddenly gained 500 pounds or so...so I only click that on when traffic is a bear anyway... I only have about 50 miles on the X1 at this point and MPG so far is in low 20s....a lot of city driving in there. |

Does anyone know which component they are talking about? If it's a serpentine belt I'm OK with that. It would suck balls to have to spend $3000 to replace the starter and flywheel every 50k though.

Really weird but the ASS works today, it took a vacation day yesterday and never came on during 3 separate trips.

On the Auto Stop/Start - I am still ambivalent on this, but some of my concerns have been mollified. For example, if you are want to make a turn and stop for traffic, the ASS does not come on. This is specified in the manual - when the steering wheel is being held for turning, ASS does not engage. And I can see this verified with the little trip computer icon, which is the A with a line through it when not engaged.
In fact, in my experience, you have to be pointing straight ahead and have your foot on the brake for ASS to engage. And if, like me, you are pretty good at anticipating a light change or when traffic will move, it's easy to lift off the brake and let the engine restart without any bad lag. I do remain concerned about the "additional wear" issue. |
