So I think I'm just going to keep my GLI, take off the catback and put the stock on so I have good performance but not all the noise. Then I'm going to wait until I find a manual 335xi or possibly buy a new 340xi in a year or two.

This may seem blasphemous around here but what about an Audi S4? I loved mine when I had it. I LOVE the Golf R but at nearly $30k, it's hard to justify it over a CPO Audi S4.

buddy of mine picked one up 2 weeks ago. I drove his and thought it was fantastic. He has a 6 speed white, and I got the DSG Lapiz Blue. No regrets. Got rid of the F80 and I don't regret it.
As far as showing off to coworkers or anything, my boss drives a beat up 90's Corolla when I'd roll in in either my M3 or '16 MX-5. If you have mutual respect like I do with my boss, it shouldn't matter what you drive, but I understand it's not the same in all fields. The stigma is interpreted in so many ways. Anyways, I love the R and it's subtle, doesn't scream boy racer, and has plenty of power and agility for everyday use. And yes, I couldn't do the RS either, it screams cheap inside...

Funny, i had a GTI and went to a 135i. My friend had a Golf R now went to M3.
Golf R is a great all around car. Difference being, the 335 has more sports car roots and feel, while the Golf R can keep up, it is still a hopped up GOLF. So do you want more all around or something with a sportier feel? FYI, i raced him stock 135i vs. Apr Stage 2 Golf R, we were neck and neck. When he went Stage 2 +, he walked me hard. Either way both cars are nice. |

MK7 Golf R is super awesome. I'm considering it for my daily since my Avalon is about to shit the bed.

Here's what I can offer-
I haven't driven the Golf R, but I only read great things about it as a driver. I personally just bought a new GTI after coming from an E90 w/ Sport Pkg previously. The new BMW's just feel too soft, imo. Add AWD into the equation, and they lose even more of their driving dynamics. The biggest thing for me is just how much more you get for your money with the Golfs. You can get a loaded GTI for stripper 320i money, and an R for a pretty basic 328i. Both VW's are more entertaining to drive than the BMW's, if you ask me. Last edited by FriskyDingo; 03-07-2016 at 05:20 PM.. |

Correction, it takes APR Stage 3 on a mkvi Gen to run 11s but guys running Stage 2 (software and downpipe) on a mkvii are running 11.7s already

I had a mk4 Golf R32 years ago and that was quite good but since the introduction of the 2.0 4 pot? Just no.
The M135i is the only true enthusiasts hot hatch. |

One thing to keep in mind, the Golf R especially in blue will attract a lot of attention. If you're into that great, if not just something to be aware of. Used to borrow my father's blue R32 on occasion (was a 2008). I got more comments on that car than on literally anything else I have driven. Random guys at home depot, gas station, etc. The R is just kind of a cult car so people that are into them are REALLY into them.

Yeah, I almost brought that up in Frisky Dingo's GTI thread but that's another reason why I would have a hard time getting back into a Golf. I was on my lunch break coming back to the office and was pulled over on the exit ramp. The cop comes up to the car and sees me in a full suit. He asks "is this your car?". I replied with the obvious. He said "oh... you can go".

In all seriousness though, I think it depends on the car and personal preference.
A3 vs A3 sedan I would take the sedan A class vs CLA I would take the A class Practicality wise hatchbacks do tend to have a smaller boot, but they are much more accessible and useful if you fold the seats down. |

right off the bat stop listening to your coworker's "opinions" because that's exactly what they are...just opinions. everyone is entitled to having them and it never means they are right.
having said that really think about how often you will be driving clients around if at all. sorry didn't know staff accountants at big public accounting firms do that? i was a finance major so i don't know too much about the accounting world, but i would just assume at entry level there's none of that going on. get what you want. as long as it's in your budget and you can comfortably afford it (whatever that means to you) then go for it. don't compromise unless you truly like the car otherwise you will regret it. golf r sounds like a great choice, but at the same time it seems like the consensus is that it is overpriced for what you get. i think your plan to keep the gli right now is a good one. save up your money and pick up a slightly used 340i later. car is awesome. |
