X1's for towing

So I used my 23d to tow my boat for the first time the other day (about 1300kg) and it was great. The big diesel torque really comes into its own when youre hauling this kind of load. I am still running it in however so I didnt really try and test the performance.

Has anyone else tried using the car to tow? What kind of economy are you getting? Crusing at 100km/h I was using about 10-11 L/100km which is pretty damn good.

Now your screenname makes sense...

Tell us more about your boat!

Does the X1 have enough grip to get up those slippery launching ramps?

Yep, the X1 manages very well seeing as it only needs grip on one wheel to move. The trick is to keep the power on even if a wheel starts to slip. Thats the only way the computer can detect slip, apply brake pressure to the wheel forcing the differential to direct power elsewhere.

The boat is an 8 metre Sportsboat known as a Thompson 8. Its all carbon fibre with a nomex core. Weighs 750kg, with 450kg of that in the keel bulb. Only 5 were ever made that I know of. The first is in the US, 2 in Sydney, 1 in Melbourne and the other is missing somewhere...

That's a big crew for an 8M....is that because she's so light you need them for ballast?

Looks like she flies...how do you do against the other classes?

yea exactly right... having weight on the side is plenty better than the equivalent in the keel bulb. Plus the sails are a lot bigger than your average 8 metre boat. The boat we are passing in the picture is a Melges 32. With a 6ft length advantage they do go quicker than us upwind, so around a track they will be ahead, but not by far. (but we have more fun downwind)
