1. Get a real spare.
2. Get a mini spare.
3. Carry flat-fix and portable compressor.

We carry a real spare for trips because the two times we have flats the tire was toast, were hundreds of miles from home, and in locations where a replacement tire was not possible because it was the weekend. The draw back is a real spare takes up room in the boot.

I do not like mini spares because of the limited speeds at which one should drive with them. They are fine if one has to drive a few miles but not 500 miles to get home.

I have a tire I’ve been holding on to, planning to use it as a full size spare. What did you do for a wheel? I spent a little time searching online, but couldn’t find a basic, inexpensive wheel - maybe I quit too soon...

Like BeEmVe, I toss one of my snow tires in if I am vacationing far from home, otherwise I take my chances. I have never had a flat tire in 50 years of driving so playing the odds is a pretty good bet.

I got the alloy wheel donut from bav auto. I already had a jack and wrench. They fit under the cargo foor, the wheel can be strapped flat to the fcargo foor ar when traveling with the dog in the back we strap it to the rear seats up in the vertical position. Great piece of mind we routinely travel 800 mile round trips through areas with little or no service

https://www.bavauto.com/bmw-spare-tire-b36000178

A mini spare will get you 500 miles no problem.

I carry a high quality BlackJack tire repair (plug) kit. That, along with a jack and lug wrench.

Last time I was stranded for 5 hours in a x3 with run flats and no spare I had a really great plug kit however that didn't do me any good as the run flat tire was shredded after driving 12 miles to a safe stopping point

Sunday evening everything within 300 miles was closed

Wow just 12 miles? How old was that tire. 50 miles is manufacturer suggested limit and they usually underestimate that.

Hey guys,

A quick follow up on this. I've decided to build my own spare kit including a spare tire (donut), jack (oem), wheel chock (oem) and lug wrench all under $130.

This kit will be used for long trips. I have road side assistance for in town emergencies. Also will replace run flats with Michelin Pilots or Premier. Most concern is wet traction since I live in Florida.

All parts arrived except the jack. Will post images when everything comes in. Thank you everyone for your opinions and comments. Greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Stare donut and foam tool tray came together on ebay. $35+25 shipping.

Wheel chock and lug wrench also from ebay. Different seller. And finally the jack from a third and different Ebay seller.

Remaining parts came today. Will post images as soon as I upload them to my server.

PS: Took me about a month to hunt the best prices possible and matching parts.

Thanks.

spare tire

I ended up keeping the best shape run flat tire and then had a rim put on it and it resides in my garage. I ended up buying all weather non run flat nokian tires. I do prefer them to the run flats that came with my 2014 X1

Was able to test the donut yesterday with great results. Drove around for a bit with it. No problems.

Now trying to find a solution to carry it in the car for long trips. Not sure what's everyone doing about that.

Thanks!

We have summer and winter tires. So in our case we just toss one or the other in. Finding a descent wheel with run a couple of hundred.

We store our tires in a plastic garbage bag and just toss it in the back.

Make sure you try out the jack in that kit. I know that one vendor has the scissors jack in their E84 kit, not the jack you have pictured. Does that one have enough extension for the height of the X1?

For day to day my spare is strapped flat on the floor, For long trips the rear seats are vertical and the tire is strapped to the back of the seats so the dog can ride in the cargo area

Hi Maxisgamez,

How do you determine the donut tire size? I believe X1 comes with 17" or 18" rims. My current tire size is 225/45/18 so wonder if you can tell how the donut tire size? Thank you so much in advance for your help.

Run your tire size through a diameter talk later… The new tire size should have an equivalent diameter plus or minus
