Newbie paddle shifter question

In manual mode, when I go to stop it automatically downshifts--but instead of M1, it is on M2. Is there a reason for this? Is it OK to go from a standstill in M2. On a manual transmission, I would never start in 2nd gear. Going from a standstill in M2 seems to be no problem though. This is my first automatic so please excuse the question if it seems dumb.

I definitely like the paddle shifters. If I can 't have a manual tranny, this makes it fun still.

That is normal, going to M2. I always go to manual mode and never manually switch to M1 from M2 - so I always start in M2. Traction is much better this way.

All hogwash. Starting in 1st is always better, more acceleration. As to why it doesn't go into first on the 35i, no idea.

On my sDrive28i manual mode does drop to M1 at a stop...I'm sure this is due to the difference in transmissions.

I drive a sDrive 20d with the eight speed automatic and mine also does the same thing. Even if I'm driving in normal auto it often pulls away from stop in second if I don't come to a complete standstill.

The 2nd gear thing is to make it easy for you to enhance traction under slick conditions like snow or mud.

Best way for non racing acceleration is to just floor it in drive (1st gear), and trans will run it out to red line in each gear.

Had no ideal the 28i went to M1 at a stop. That is really interesting. I don't think my 35i would go to M2 at a stop if it wasn't proper. M1 starts just fine but I tend to shift up to M2 quickly if smoothness is what I'm looking for.

All you have to do is pop the shifter forward to switch it to M1 at a stop. My 35i always gives me M2, even manually. Yeah, I can do this, but I can't find the damn dipstick.

IS there at least a way of checking oil level? Is BMW one of those manufacturers that make self-maintenance difficult? Sorry 'bout the hijack.
