So my daily driver is an x1 35i “crossover.” I put crossover in quotes because the deeper you look into these cars the less crossover they are. They are almost entirely based of a 3 series which is a car. To give it the “crossover” look bmw added huge fender wells and higher suspension but park next to any average car and the roof is only a few inches taller. I am a wagon guy so once I figured this out and mixed with the fact that this comes with the 300hp n55 turbo six cylinder while the equivalent 3 series wagon does not (in the US) I figured this was a interesting car to buy.

I’ve had the car for over a year now but after hitting a pothole about 2 months away from snowtire season in Ohio I decided to skip out on the $350 x 2 to replace the rear summer PS4s and buy all terrain tires and other 17in bmw wheels. These are snow rated and able to be used all year. They’re a pretty impressive tire. I am really excited to go find some dirt roads. This little, AWD, turbo, car, in a crossover disguise, should be a total blast in the going sideways in the dirt!

Added my roof rack on today on my lunch break. Later this week I plan to add my Thule roof basket to finish off the “Off-roading” look. It still won’t be offical until I actually take off road though. I’m still looking into what is around.

For anyone looking to increase the tire size on their e84 x1 35i or 28i I found another useful post on here stating that 225/55/17 will fit on the x1 with no rubbing. After having these on for a week I can confirm this to be true. This setup is even a bit more aggressive with the all terrain tread. The tire is the 225/55R-17 Falken WildPeak A/T Trail XL. The 17in wheels are style 157 off of an e90. These fit over the 35i brakes with no issue which means they should have no problem fitting over the smaller 28i brakes too.

Here’s the final visual modification, my Thule roof basket. Next stop is hopefully some dirt roads or at least some snow storms this winter.

I really like the look! Kind of jealous... We've got the TÜV looking at mods like that...
