Disappointment with BMW Euro Delivery

I recently took delivery of a 2014 X1 Xline at BMW Welt. We then drove around much of Europe for over three weeks before returning to Munich for the shipment to the US.

The biggest issue was the European maps installed in the car for our use. They were obviously 4-5 years old. Many of the "points of interest" were gone (restaurants, other shops). But the biggest issue was the roads in eastern Europe - the old East Germany, Poland, the Czech Republic, Austria, and Slovenia in particular. Roads have been extensively upgraded in these countries, and the map set given us did not come close to matching the road reality in these places.

The US European Delivery office gave us the runaround (this is a BMW Welt issue), and there seems to be no way to get anyone at BMW Germany to answer an email.

This marred an otherwise nice time. But as DRIVING the car is the point of the European Delivery program, you'd think they'd be a little more sensitive to their customers (especially as Americans generally are not up on their Polish, Bohemian, or Slovenian languages).

Interesting we had very good luck with the maps but were mostly in Germany, Austria, and France. To the point that we ended up on some very narrow back roads to get around a road diversion. It went very smoothly. I should also note that we supplemented the navigation with other maps, actually Google maps. Even as an American I have never had an issue with languages - and would expect anyone going to a foreign country to do their homework beforehand. So I am not sure how sensitive they should be.

That said, given you dropped the car back off in Munich, like most I assume you went directly to the airport rather than talk to the folks at BMW Welt. Whom I found to be supper helpful and attentive.

I will note that when we initially wanted to drop our car off that it was a German holiday. When we returned I sent a note to BMWEuropeanDelivery@bmwna.com and suggested some changes to their website regarding holidays. They took those suggestions and made some changes. Was this the email that you sent a message?

Edit to add: Did you check the version of the maps? I would guess they were BMW's version of the 2013 maps.

I did Euro delivery on my X1 with no NAV, but used printed google maps of zoomed in cities, and hwys.

I got lost a lot, mainly from not catching the right turn or exit.

Google maps will sometimes put a marker at wrong spot on map, and it might take 30 minutes to cross the street into other district.

However, my biggest complaint is signage in Germany. So you go to a T with a sign for some small community that's not on map. No sign for bigger city to link you up, and they switch back and forth from city names to numbers, and vice versa.

Last time I was in EU we only had a paper map with which to get around...and we had to buy that! Imagine the torture we must have gone through. It was horrible. I thought we'd NEVER find Dachau.

Concerning the crappy NAV maps on my X1...yeah, they suck, and getting BMW to provide regular updates is like pulling hen's teeth. This is well-documented on every BMW forum I've ever visited.

Apparently BMW use TomTom maps. The sad part is that my 10 year old $100 TomTom is more functional than my 2014 BMW Nav. Some streets in Vancouver does not even allow you to input a street number.
Very sad indeed.

TY, Njerts, I was thinking of my Audi. But BMW still does a lousy job of making sure that the map database is current when cars are delivered. Audi was worse.

Not sure how accurate this is but the when I picked up my X1 this week, I asked the sales guy about map updates. He said that BMW only updates the maps every 24 months but I have no way of knowing if this is accurate or not.

The maps on our 2013 X1 are from 2012. It was a late 2013 build so the maps are a year older than they should be. That said, the maps are pretty good except around the Füssen area where there's been a lot of construction. I've yet to drive in former East Germany.

I think it's ridiculous that a $100 TomTom gets free maps but a $2000 BMW doesn't get a single map update.

As I understand it the maps for 2014 (U.S.?) were just updated like last October (2013). What is crazy is that they charge $245 for this.

Do a search as there are folks out there who will supply a code for $50. You will still need a USB drive with maps which some already have.

My 2014 X1-35 was delivered with the new maps already installed so I didn't need this. Thanks anyway though.
