Dunno, but the older tranny is probably cheaper, if they're trying to save a bit of money.
No R&D required. The same reason why the older transmission is being used with the N55 is the same reason why offering 6MT would be easy. They did not adapt the drivetrain architecture for the X1 in any drastic way. As a result, they did not bother mating the 8sp with the N55; where the existing 6AT mounts fine to the N55. Other than that there isn't a ton of additional concerns for integration.

The most difficult aspect of supplying a MT for this car is the ordering/factory outfitting logistics and maybe inventory. That's it.

And that is millions of dollars. If you've ever been to the factory, you know the logistics/assembly of all of this is serious business. How many millions in logistics should they spend to justify satisfying 3% of buyers?

When I said "development costs" I mean logistics/supply chain, not traditional R&D.

I was hopeful bmw would put the 8speed in the x1. I'm sure the 6sp auto is the cheaper unit of the two so that's probably why they stuck with that given the volume they are anticipating to sell. Plus the car weighs pretty much the same as the e90xi so why not?

Still like to know if the f31 335i is US bound:-) that will make things tough.

Maybe they'll put the 8spd in with the N54 in the X1 M35i --- an I can slap my tune and meth kit from my e92 right in --- I can dream right?!

I just want an SAV that has 450whp, runs 11's, gets 30mpg highway and tows my boat on the weekends --- is that so much to ask?

I've spent a lot of time lurking on the F30 forums (still haven't decided whether I'll get the F30/31 or X1) and I think Scott26 at some point indicated that the F31 would come in only one configuration, N20 4 cyl w/ 8-speed auto. That would be consistent with what they are doing with the E91 (NA 6 cyl with auto trans) and makes sense given that they had previously decided not to bring the F31 to the US at all. Again, we get screwed by the fact that American's don't buy wagons

I thought he said it will only come with the N20 but don't remember him saying no manual transmission.

Think you're right. Sorry, guess I just assumed that since they didn't offer manual in E91. I looked back and Scott26 said he assumed the would bring it if they offered F30 328i with manual, which they did. We'll see.

guess, depending how the x1 looks in person or how i like my 3day rental of the 2013 mustang gt, f31 wagon is out if it doesn't have a 335i trim.

How can we get in touch with this guy to let him know we really do demand a manual transmission in the X1?
And while I'm at it, he's probably the one to beg for the 1 series hatch as well.

My current 1 is proving why I wish I didn't go against my original intentions of getting a hatchback, and though the X1 looks like a good solution as well, I'm not driving a slushbox. So short of the mini countryman getting prettier, BMW is going to lose my business on my next purchase.

They didn't offer a 6MT E91 in the US? I thought that they did.

Also, that should be "don't" not "didn't". E91 is still in production until 6/12 and available for order currently.
