A big part of the extra price of Europe and Canada is taxes. VAT taxes in Canada could account for the difference or a good part of it. Isn't VAT automatically added, what % is VAT in Canad around 8.5% or is it higher? The is no national sales tax is the US.

The MSRP of Canadian vehicles are always stated before any Federal and Provincial sales taxes (which in my Province total an additional 13%). It is also prior to any PDI (prep and delivery) charges - which tend to be double of that stateside).
So the MSRP comparison of a BMW in Canada vs an identical vehicle in the States is a true apples to apples comparison - and we're getting screwed to the tune of an additional 20%
That Aussies are getting screwed even worse doesn't really make me feel any better about it.

Transportation, special design to meet local regs, market rules, profit margins, volumes, there are many reasons why the -supposedly- same car is priced differently depending on the country.

For instance, France is probably the country where French manufactured cars are the most expensive... Go figure...

Which dealer was this? Did they confirm with their Regional Manager? If it's BMW Laval, I'd believe em...

I'd be willing to pay a surcharge for 6MT...

You poor broken man!

Actually, funny thing.. my girlfriend despised manual transmissions. After a few months of favours and rom-coms, she owed me. She learned it and now loves it!

I am not sure how taxes affect pricing in Canada. It is not just the sale tax, there are corporate taxes, road use taxes, etc. So it is quite possible that some of that 20% fee doesn't end up in BMW's pocket.

Anyway I am willing to pay 20% more for my cars and have free health care.

No, there are no additional taxes incorporated into the MSRP.
And I doubt you'd be willing to pay an extra 20% for a vehicle (for free health care) when you've already paid for it through income and health taxes.

But, thanks for playing.

Well, if in US you have a family and one of them has a chronic health problem and then you loose your job and health insurance due to recession, then that 20% discount seems souperfluous.

Could you let me know which BMW dealer informed you of a 6MT X1 in Canada?

While I would love to be proven wrong, I really really doubt if one exists.

fx55's lone post about the 6MT was well before the final specs for US/CAN were released, so s/he may have been subjected to mere speculation/hearsay from the dealer.

I suspect the cost of a specially ordering and re-certifying a 6MT X1 will be much much higher than the $400 quoted.

Let's not go there. For us MT purists, you can have the smoothest and quickest autobox in the world, and we'll still feel that we're missing out on the fun of a real tranny.

Color options

There is only limited color options available on the Canadian website. Does anybody know if we Canucks can special order colors available to US that are not on the Canadian site? And how much extra?

Thanks.

Does anyone know if Canada will get another engine to choose from for the X1? I'd rather opt for the engine in the 128/328 than the currently offered 4 banger.

Don't think so. This new 2.8 is the way they are going.

However, the Cdn manual also covers the old 135/335 engine, but I am guessing that was for when they were planning to release it in the U.S.
That all changed when the US cancelled their plans in the Feb timeframe and BMW announed thenew one. BMW has announced a lot of the engine plans fo the future.

That's too bad. I've never thought of turbo engines as long term propositions. And with the fuel pump fiasco plaguing 135/335 owners I fear something similar may happen with this engine.

I'd perfectly happy with a naturally aspirated in-line 6 cylinder. I'd take it any day over a turbo 4. JMO.
