Compression Noise on full steering wheel lock

I am looking at a X1 2.0d as an option, and during the test drive, there was a loud compression noise whenever the steering wheel was fully locked to either side. The dealer says that this is standard on all X1's. I haven't tested others, but it doesn't sound right to me.

Does anyone else know of this?

My 18d does the same and has done ever since I got it... July 2011.

I've had a few cars that have done this over the years and even my wife’s MY06 Ford Fiesta does it to a certain degree.

What you are hearing is the excess fluid going through the "waste" gate back to the steering fluid reservoir. Typically on an EPS steering you will not be hearing that. This swishing sound is most annoying on American made car because of its massive curb weight, and quietest on European lighter cars. This can be attributed to a bad "waste" valve, overfill / underfill or an early production bug. On my 2009 e93 328i cabriolet, you really have to listen carefully. On Servotronic option, the pressure is modulated in relation to the speed, i.e. maximum at slow speed and minimum at higher speed, thereby the swishing sound is attenuated.

This is normal if you have hydraulic steering on your X1, not normal if you have the servotronic option..
